Schmelly's swap thread

I was waiting until my swap was finished to post about it, so here's the story.

My buddy's 5.5gen was totaled as a result of his CF hood flying up on him and denting the roof. I drove up to Las Cruces, NM and pulled the motor on the weekend of 8/24/12. The motor had 117,765 miles on it when we pulled it.

And there the motor sat until late December when I started the swap after the semester ended. I parked the 3.0 and pulled it on 12/22/12 with the intent of making yet another y pipe for my headers that day. We ended up postponing the y pipe until the 3.5 was all sealed up and ready to install.

3.0de tb for now. Coolant passages chopped off.

Now the y pipe fab. I initially toyed around with some bends from the altima y pipe to see what I was dealing with. A lot of the fabbing was done with the engine out of the car.

First start up I forgot to reconnect the brake booster and it died almost instantly. I reconnected that and the second startup I heard a nasty whining, filled the ps reservoir and that went away.
After all of that I still heard some knocking, checked around with a high tech stethiscope and determined it was coming from the oil pan. Turns out the 3.0 oil pan baffle was hitting one of the rods so I had the joy of dropping the oil pan with the engine installed. The 3.0 oil pan baffle is flat whereas the 3.5 pan baffle is recessed in the center. So I swapped those out and went on my way.

The car was out of hibernation and moving under its own power on 2/14/13. I ran this intake up until 3/8/13 when I reinstalled the stock midpipe so the PCV system was fully connected for my trip out to SoCal this past weekend.

Here it is as it sits now:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/schmellyfart/8555788221/http://www.flickr.com/photos/schmellyfart/8555788221/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/schmellyfart/, on Flickr

Only codes I have are for the IACV which is not even connected right now, and the knock sensor, which I will just put a resistor in for.

I am using a 2003 3.5 fuel rail, with a de-k fpr and the lower half of the original 3.5 supply fuel line as the return adapter. I originally had the same adapter I used on my de-k fuel rail, but that o ring leaked on me.

I also installed poly side mounts, nwp spacers, and the engine came with a NWP block off plate.

First time stepping on it after clutch break in. Untuned, no spacers, super short sri (no front bank pcv)

Exhaust clip

I still need to redrill my pftb or make an adapter plate for it. My car has been idling between 800 and 1000rpm.

I've put about 2000 miles on the car since the swap and have been averaging 22mpg for most tanks, two have been 26 mpg though.

The VQness runs deep with this one.

So you have the the VQ35 mated to your original 5MT? How's the vibration?

I'm not holding my breath for a 13 sec pass. The only good track out here is closed now. There's one with notoriously sh!tty prep that's closing down in April. Leaving us with one track at 3000ft in the butthole of Arizona.

Yup. Its almost nonexistant since the car doesn't idle below 800 rpm with this setup.

I did some tuning last night, and turns out there was some fuel corrections on the EU that I forgot about, it was still rich at 12.0:1, and timing at the top end was 27-29* with no adjustment. low/mid range was terrible with only 13-17* of advance.

I'm selling the motor to a local to put in his 4th gen.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that of all things I lost the clutch fork retaining clip and my crank REF sensor. I pulled the clip from an old stanza at the junkyard and deloa84 gave me one of his spare crank REF sensors.

bomz cone filter on stock maf and hemholtz resonator
60mm 3.0DE tb
NWP 5pc spacers minus tb spacer
NWP BOP
Altima headers
3"y pipe
3" Cattman Exhaust
470k ohm resistor in KS harness
e-Manage Ultimate - mild street tune - little bit of fuel and timing, will get specifics later.

Rev limit set at 7000, shifted at 6500 in 1st, probably took it to 7 in 2nd and 3rd. I haven't done any tuning above 6500.

The tires chirped off and on through 1st, 2nd spun a lot and I just stayed in the throttle until the tires caught, and I rode the rev limiter in 3rd going through the traps. Not gonna lie, I'm used to taking it to 7200 and being able to stay in 3rd through the traps.

All in all it was a dirty pass leaving plenty of room for improvement. I'm planning on going to IFO on the 7th, so I should be able to get some clean passes in then.

I'm 816, 769 is another 3.5 swapped 4th gen with intake and a muffler.

I have a PFTB and my 3.5" intake waiting to be installed.

Finally installed my PFTB with about 100miles into a tank of gas on Saturday 4-13-13. Filled up at 380 miles today and I averaged 25 mpg on this tank. Previous best with the old tb on this motor was 23.4 with city hwy mix.

I only used 3 different bolts for the old tb.

Close enough lol

Little bit of weight reduction and installed the final NWP spacer.

Yup as long as you have the right tools, its not something I would try with a hand drill though.

Very nice man.It makes me wonder about the 3.0 upper pan I used in my swap. I didn't have noise at the beginning but months down the road I had some noise in the lower end. I never had a chance to tear it apart since it was impounded and I never seen the car again. Anyways congrats. And I'm happy to hear the EU is still treating you well

Regarding that 3" ypipe is that a Flowmaster item or what brand? It kinda looks like a flowmaster.....I'm glad you utilized that fat a$$ Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator.....Who did your welding? If you did, I can see you've improved quite a bit.....I should try to find myself a PFTB as well but, I would install mine Via an adapter plate.....Very good job it's really not that hard now that it's been done so many times......It'll be nice to find a nice low mileage 7thGen for the 5.5thGen and stick my 5.5thGen into the 4thGen...A double wammy Swap!

The merge is a Flowmaster Y214300S. I love that resonator, with it I can comfortably accelerate through the drone zone without drone. The only exception is on 6 hour drives, where the drone was definitely there.
I had a friend of mine from high school do the welding, not the same guy that did the first y pipe
The PFTB is well worth it, 3.0 or 3.5.
ALL of the information is out there. I had a couple questions as I progressed and the were either answered in the FSM or on here.

That's weird you say that about the Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator...I've upgraded my 3" Cattman resonator section with my own Hybrid Resonator Section utilizing a Magnaflow 12649 6" x 18" Round Muffler and it really quiets the exhaust at idle, thru the drone zone and at Cruising speeds on street or highway. I've been on 2 four to five hour trips and it's simply amazing how quiet it really is for a header and 3" exhaust equipped car....

I bet that's the difference right there. The Vibrant is only 10" long and the mangnaflow is nearly double that.

Even then I'm still pleased with its performance.

Thanks man!

I've been getting about 25/26 mpg since I finally installed the pftb on this motor.

Just filled up after a trip up north this weekend. 27.9 mpg 90% hwy. Not quite what I got with the 3.0 but hopefully it will improve a bit more once I get my 3.5" intake re installed.

Bump with dyno numbers:
Finally got a chance to dyno the swap today. I decided to spring the extra $10 for an AFR reading since my EU is disconnected. Grand total: $30 for two pulls.

Same shop/dyno I used for my previous pulls with the 3.0.

Minor changes that might affect readings:
~New tires 245/50R16.
~Finally had the car aligned after the swap.

Current setup:
+02 VQ35 w/3.0 timing, DE-K Injectors & FPR, return fuel setup
+Stock 5th gen intake w/ bomz cone filter
+PFTB
+NWP BOP
+NWP 5pc spacers
+Altima headers w/ 3" y pipe back

Fuel and timing are bone stock, no adjustments made.

Just a heads up to those looking to swap. Replace all of the coolant pipe gaskets while you are swapping them over to the 3.5. I reused mine and they all ended up leaking on me. The water inlet gasket only took a few weeks before it started leaking. The two water outlet gaskets lasted me about 8 months before they started leaking.
