Hi, I found this number on the firewall plate on a 1997 Nissan Maxima SE. RE4FO4A Does this car have locking or non locking differential? Thanks if you can help.

I have an RE4FO4B which is supposed to be only slightly different, and it's non-locking. I called my Nissan dealer and gave them my VIN to have them verify.

I've been told RE4FO4A and RE4FO4B can be interchanged, and given that LSD requires a different drivers axle I'd bet on your tranny being non-LSD.

The RE4F04A (95-99) and RE4F04B (2000-2002) are non-VLSD - an open differential. The RE4F04V (95-99) and RE4F04W (2000-2002) are VLSD. The A and B models, and the V and W models are not directly interchangeable. The solenoid connector and shift cable/switch are not the same, but the 2000-2002 trannys can be made to work in 95-99 Maxes.. Driver's side axles are different for VLSDs. Been there done that more than once. Racecaw...
