$1,000 maxima, but needs differential, is it worth it?

i totaled my maxima a couple weeks ago, and i have been driving my truck around...

anyway, this would be my SECOND vehicle and i want to find another maxima

i have found a 98 maxima that has some goodies,
but it needs a differential, for $1000 is it worth it? how hard are they to replace? any advice would be very grateful!

are you sure it's the dif? could be other things also. how comfortable are you with dropping the trans, popping the case, and doing some internal work?

Wont move? Any possibility the rear brakes are seized? Weren't the rear brakes notorious for freezing on these cars?
I have a 97 and the rear passenger side is froze open. The driver side was semi froze (wouldn't release fully) but I just recently changed it yesterday.
Might be worth checking the rear brakes.

Assuming its a 5 spd, the diffy and input shaft bearings go all the time. Either buy a used trans or have the original one rebuilt correctly. You may as well replace the clutch, resurface the flywheel, and rear main seal while you are in there.
It could quickly become a money pit.

really depends on whether or not it is as advertised. if it truly only needs the diff and is otherwise clean it would be a real nice pick-up. if it needs more work you could easily end up with a $1000 car that cost you $3000.

its the best & cheapest route, if the issue is trans related only

Where's your wrecked Max trans at? Using it would be the easiest or the salvage yard for another trans! I would do it! Any pictures?????

You really need to find out what's wrong first.....and make sure the engine runs, and the body is in decent condition!

If you can pull and replace the trans and clutch yourself, I say consider it. If you have to pay a shop to do the work, pass.
