Im gettin 25mpg on an untuned max wit oovi swap n 255fp n 350z injectors n i cant use anythin less that prem evem wen i was stock i couldnt my car would sputter with anythin less

the car has a race engine, and premuim fuel does benifit it, worth the money id say. if your car is running properly you can feel the difference when using unleaded and premuim, i own two maximas and both feel different when using premuim, and shell/chevron gas is probably the best buy if going premuim. but thats my opinion.

What is the recommendation in the manual? If it says 87, then that's what you should be running. Otherwise you are just wasting your money.

I track mileage at every fill up and was getting 18mpg filling up at Mobil.

I filled up at Marathon and got 21.8mpg. Awesome, best I've had since I started driving this car.

Filled up again at Marathon last week and am right on pace for 22mpg. Odo says 270 and gauge is showing 1/4 of gas. I should be on pace to score another 22mpg this time around as well.

Car runs smooth with no hiccups and no carbon buildup.

If I run regular in my camaro it knocks and will build up carbon, in turn hurting the gas mileage even further.

If Nissan engineered this car to run on 87 then run that. If they recommend another grade, then you can't go wrong.

There ya go. Nissan RECOMMENDS premium, but not REQUIRED. Nothing new here, really.

And I can CONFIRM that gas stations only have 2 tanks; regular and super...to get the mid-grade it takes from both tanks. I used to work in a gas station several years ago.

This is how I feel reading ALL 4 pages of this thread. but I must say I run the same route everyday in all types of driving conditions and have experienced many variables, I am on the team that sees better performance and MPG with 93 versus 87. I alternate octanes based on my wallet but I might reconsider going premium only as long as it tends to stay under 4 bucks a gallon. Damn Big Oil companies!

Can you do some quick math on miles per dollar spent on gas? That's the debate going on here. For instance, when using premium, I get 6.38 miles for every $1 I spend on premium. Last time I did a run of regular, it came out to be 6.11 miles for every $1 of regular gas.

DR J, What's the point of calculating the miles per dollar? Since the price of gas changes you will get different number of miles for the same dollar even though your car did the same number of miles per gallon.
Here is an example:
You filled up your car with 13 gallons @ $3.07 per gallon =$40 and did 300 miles then your price per dollar is 300/40= 7.5 miles per dollar

Now you fill the same car with 13 gallons @ $3.25 per gallon = $42.25 and did the same 300 miles then your price per dollar is 300/42.25 = 7.1 miles per dollar.

So really there is not a good comparison for anything as number of miles you cover for the same number of gallon of gas changes and the price of gas changes.

Of course gas prices fluctuate. Make them constant for your calculation. Or if you can explain how price of gas affects MPG. I guess if gas prices go up, some people drive more conservatively?

If you say make the gas price constant we need to have a base line for everyone in this thread so that we all calculate the dollar per mile for the same gas price.

I gased up with Costco Premium (91 octane) for the first time since I've owned the car. I've always previously used regular. The car does seem to run a little smoother than with regular.

This has been an interesting thread to read through. I am picking up my first Maxima tomorrow, and have been reading all of the different opinions on regular vs. premium. We will have to see!!

The fact that the price of gas fluctuates doesn't meant that what Thurz stated about getting 6.38 miles for every $1 of premium vs 6.11 miles for every $1 of regular gas is wrong. You have to consider in the cases that you made.

If 91 octance is priced at 3.07 then moves up to 3.25 then it would be the case compared to its regular counterpart (87) going from 2.87 to 3.05 the miles per dollar would still yield results in favor of the higher octane.

That means, that though gas prices will fluctuate and so will the dollar/mile then the mile/dollar will still be better in (91) vs (87).

Because it is not obvious to the common people that price increase or decrease is not linear, so the miles per dollar will change. So one day it is cheaper to run with Regular and other days it is cheaper with Premium.

Here is an example.
Regular Gas
1 gallon costs $3.25 and gets me 24miles, than I get 7.38 miles per dollar
Price of gas increases to $3.35
miles per dollar = 7.16

Premium
1 gallon costs $3.75 and gets me 28miles then i get 7.47 miles per dollar
Price of premium increases to 4.00
miles per dollar = 7.0 miles

If regular gas prices go up by a certain amount, doesn't that usually mean premium gas is raised about the same?

No it is not always a linear increase. if you remember back in the days the price difference between regular and premium was only about 5 or 7 cents. nowadays they are between 35 to 55 cents difference.
