Rear Window Tint Mystery??

This morning when I went outside I noticed my rear window tint on the back glass was completely gone It's like it just disappeared or something. I'm not sure if it was the hot weather that destroyed it or what? Or maybe when I got the car tinted about 1 1/2 years ago the people put the tint on the outside and it just fell off or something, not sure? Has anyone had this problem? Do some people install the rear window tint for the back glass on the outside, just curious?

WTF? lol

Tint is supposed to be installed on the inside of the glass not the outside.

Oh snap ! Are my eyes playing tricks on me or what?? I went inside the car and examined the rear window back glass and it does have the tint film on there. Man, this Florida sun changed the tint from 15% to 50%, wow ! Its either that or the tint that I got pre cut from ebay is cheap! It's funny though, because all of the drivers side and passenger window tints are still normal, even the tint banner on the front windshield.

that window gets more of a direct shot of the sun, compared to side windows, due to the angle. perhaps thats what happened?

Here is what my ebay pre cut tints look like after a 1 1/2 years! I purchased the 15% tints. Look at my side windows compared to the faded rear window.

I have lumar (formula one) window film and it has been a year that it was installed and still looks brand new. They offer a lifetime warranty against fade and crackle so if it fades or cracks they replace it for free anytime. Also when you clean your window film use ammonia free cleaners and that will maintain the shade of your film.

I've never seen anything like this before with window tint, and I've lived in Florida most of my life.

How is that even close to 15% on either the back or the sides? looks more like 35% to me

My new (to me) '98 SE has tint just like this. The front windows are still dark (around 25%), the back windows are almost clear, and the rear window is almost clear and bubbling. I hate stripping old tint off, but I hate this fugly tint even more.

On the bright side, you can see better at night

Tint on our Maxima is still going strong after 10+ years.

the puzzling part is that Vibes says this happened over night. If this was a gradual decay then i would understand. But damn man, thats a pretty dramatic change.

Tint's dont change that much overnight. I suppose some sort of chemical reaction could've cause this, or maybe a reaction with a high intensity specific wavelength of light that isnt in the typical sunlight spectrum...

Well, I've learned my lesson. I wont be buying pre cut ebay tints any more, because its obvious they don't last as long as llumar or 3m tints. Oh well, I guess I'm just gonna re-tint the entire car sometime next year. I do think this gradually happened but, I never noticed it like this. Yes, the tint I ordered was 15%.

removing that old ebay tint is gonna suck and prolly mess up rear window defrost unless done professionally.

I would just re-tint over the ebay stuff.

EDIT:

i tint all my cars myself and i always use the removable non-adhesive kind. Looks the best IMO and easiest to apply and remove if necessary.
