Long time listener, first time caller... Just bought my 98 SE and it appears to be getting approx 22mpg. Needs a lot of TLC though. First post. More to follow.

I have a 95 auto (bought it 4 months ago) and when I first got the car I was getting 27 mpg for mostly hwy driving. This last tank I only had 19 mpg, 90 percent of that was hwy. The things I have replaced since buying the car, knock sensor, coil on cylinder 2, new plugs, pcv valve, fuel filter and air filter. The cel works and is off while running. While in gear at red lights every once in a while it will seems like the engine hiccups (happens maybe once a min or less). I have checked for vacuum leaks and I have found none. Idle seems to be normal ( about 800-900 rpm). Tires are in good shape and I check them every couple of days. . The car drives fine but it is using to much fuel. The only things I have been able to think of is that the cat is clogged, the MAF is not reading right.

Wow you guys get that high of a MPG!? I've been getting 220-230 miles a tank. I assumed it was because of colder weather but I guess its time to check for codes.

Probably the knock sensor...........................................

I get around what your getting too on my 97 4th Gen GLE.

But I need to replace spark plugs, and I get a code for EGR valve, and a knock sensor as well.

Well I think I have found part of the issue. It seems that I may have a cat that is getting clogged up. One other issue I found is that the gas cap wasn't holding a very good seal so I replaced that. I will most likely delete the cat and wire in a resistor for the o2 sensor just so that I do not have an engine light.

(miles/gallons=mpg)
*One other little piece of advice, fill it up the same way every time. I always just let it "click" off and don't top it off. Consistency helps accuracy.
