Bad Throw Out Bearing = New Clutch?
So I had just gotten to the end of a 650 mile trip and my throw out bearing goes bad. I'm not at home, but luckily I was able to roll my car down the street to a garage. The mechanic there sounded 99% sure the problem was the throw out bearing (shifts but makes a bad whirling/grinding/loose sound when engaged).
The mechanic there made it sound like it was just the throw out bearing, but the guy at the front of the store told me it would probably need a new clutch. Would a throw out bearing mess up the clutch? I hardly drove on it (less than 1 mile). The clutch was working perfectly until this happen. I just don't want to be paying for new parts when the ones in there were/are working fine.

A bad TOB could mess with the pressure plate but its unlikely.
When you say it makes a noise when its engaged, what to you mean exactly?
If it is the TOB the tranny needs to be removed. Its a lot of work (ie labor $$$) to get in there, so it usually warrents the extra money for a new clutch. Also its a good time for a rear main seal and flywheel resurfacing. I know it sounds like tons of money to fix a $20 part but in the end you'll probably never need to redo anything.

The shop called me back. They looked inside the clutch area and said there were metal shavings all over the place. They're not 100% sure exactly what happened, but something in there blew up. The guy actually sounded impressed.
I had the original clutch changed when I bought the car from a dealer (Master and Slave) but I don't think they replaced the pressure plate or the TOB at the time. 170k miles later we're guessing one of those 2 exploded and took out the clutch with it. The clutch had 85k on it, so it wasn't exactly new. I guess it could be worse.
Yea I'm having them replace everything while they are in there. All told it's going to be slightly less than a grand. It's got a 12 month warranty, so at least that's some comfort in case they make a mistake installing it all.
