This is what works on my gf's 1999 I30.

Keep the driver's door open. The second you put the key to the "on" position, press the door trigger about 7-8 times rapidly. Turn key "off".

Start the car, airbag light should be off. If not, repeat. If it doesn't work on the first try, it always works on the second try.

Good luck.

replace side air bags, or change air bag module to a two air bag system. Teh door switch is just a temp solution.

The flashing light is indicating a fault exists. Pull the codes, and fix the problem and the light will stop flashing.

It's probably the side airbags, common in the 99's for some reason.

Just took Wiz's advice and it worked. Will see if it does it again after awhile. It only started doing it after I swapped the engine.

True, it's most likely temporary. But temporary could be three days, 3 weeks, or 3 months etc. I've cleared the light on my gf's 99 a couple of times now and it hasn't come back in about 3 months.

I've read that people have brought their Maxima's into Nissan, changed the module (very pricey) and it didn't solve the problem. Other's have done both airbags and module (insanely expensive) and the fix only lasted a short while. As you can deduce, it's not the module or the airbag, but something electrical.

Overall, I feel it's not worth the money to replace items when a) these cars are too old and not worth it b)chances are, nothing is wrong with said items.

Yes, pretty much all cases that I've read over the years have pointed to the side airbags. But like I said above, chances are there really isn't a problem.

why not get a garage to look at it and scan it.
The factory service manual lists about 25 things that can cause ithe light to blink.

Mine has been blinking steady for the last 2 years. I tried multiple times to clear it but it always goes back to blinking. I don't even notice it anymore.

This procedure will help it from recurring - may not fix it permanently but it helps:

Disconnect the battery!

Remove the back of the upper seat and find the wiring harness that leads to the side air bag.

Remove the connector that is in the harness and solder the wires back together (individually of course)

Reassemble and reset the system.

I know that is oversimplified maybe but hopefully you get the idea. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Im the original owner of mine(98 se w/side air bags). Alittle over 6 mos. into owning the car the air bag light started blinking. I bought it to the dealer under warranty and it was fixed at no cost. Nissan gaurantees these repairs for a year. Eventually the stupid light came on again under the year repair warranty. No lie, i ended up bringing the car in for this issue SEVEN times!!!

After the final repair, which went past the one year warranty, the damn light came on again. I bring it to the dealer and now they want to charge me $800 for the repairs. Are these people f***in crazy!?!? Why would i pay $800 for this!?!?! They had 7 attempts to fix this and there is no guarantee it will work this time. So i gave up and have had that light blinking for the majority of the life of the car.

Im hoping once i replace my tan leather seats wo side airbags and replace the module that damn light will FINALLY go away.

I tried this a couple of months ago to try to resolve the light to no avail. I just tried the pass side. But i may try to go futher down the harness since it is known to fail. Just havent had time to do it with all the other issues i have to sort out first.

So i have tried the reset procedure a million times and given up. Looks like the 99's have problems with the side air bags because of the harness length or something. Is it possible to make this go away by replacing the airbag control module with one w/o side airbags. if so which years would work? I am not concerned about the side airbags - just want to ensure the front ones will work in an accident. Are there any ways to fix this like reconnecting the harness, etc ? There so much info on the 4th gen maximas everywhere but no real solution for this particular one which seems really common

I find that if I momentarily disconect the connector under the driver seats going to the side airbag I am then able to turn off the light using the reset procedure. If I don't perform the disconnect it will not reset.

not true, steady air bag light = no air bag, blinking is just some diagnostic mode, i remember reading about that before, some people with blinking light had their airbag deployed during accident. eventually side airbag wouldn't work, which is 99% couse this light

Mine has been on for ~3 years. Evry time I pull a code, nothing. Every time I reset it, it will come back in 2-3 days. So I've always just reset it as I take it in for my safety & emissions.

My airbag light has come on a few times over the years. I did the door light reset trick many times, usually works for about 6 months.

I have some friends in the airbag business, finally got the answer to clear the light, hopefully for good.

Here's the problem, the harness plus for the side airbags (in time) builds up resistance. This trips the light.

The solution? Under your drivers/pass set you'll fund a yellow wiring harness, this is mounted to the front of your seat. Shut the car off, unplug the wiring harness, replug it in... Do this about 10 times, unplug/re-plug the harness. This will help remove the resitiance and keep the light off... Un-plug/re-plug the harness 10 times on both sides.. Now reset the airbag system with the door adjar switch trick...

This should clear your light for a few years.

I did this a year ago, light has not tripped since.

Good luck

Good to know. In the past ,i was told if the air bag light was blinking the air bag system would then be deactivated.

I replaced the entire system for $250 total and deleted the side bags. Found the module, airbags and seatbelts in the classified section. A year later and everythings still good....
