Is it time to clean my EGR tube?

My SES light came on the other day, so I checked for codes and got 0302. I've been researching the subject on the forum and have gathered a lot of good info. I have just about decided to go buy the necessary gaskets and try to tackle it this weekend. I removed and cleaned the TB and IACV about a year and a half ago, but unfortunatlely did not touch the EGR valve/tube. It seems as though I will have to remove the IACV to get to the EGR tube. Is it necessary to remove the TB as well? If it will make the job a lot easier then I will remove both. If anyone has any good tips/advice I would greatly appreciate it. It is great to have access to so much knowledge and info that this forum provides, and is always appreciated!

How many miles? Above 100k I suggest you'll be surprised how stuffed up with carbon it is. There is a write up here on the org if you don't know how to do it.

What are the symptoms that your max is giving? My 96 Maxima SE has 200k and recently is burning a lot more fuel than usual and a rough idle when in drive. I get the odd P0400 code but thats about it any suggestions? I changed the plugs in the fall.

My max has 114k miles on it. It actually runs pretty well the majority of the time. I replaced the plugs, fuel filter, tranny fluid, and coolant around 100k when i bought the car. I keep the oil changed regularly with Mobil 1 5w30. I had a misfire a while back and ended up replacing all 6 coilpacks and 1 injector. I have had no real problems since then, except for a bad alternator and o2 sensor. Every now and then it idles a little low (around 500 rpm), and occasionally seems to lack power on acceleration. I usually average 19 mpg/city and 25mpg/highway. The gas mileage dropped considerably this winter, but I figure a lot of that was due to me warming the car a couple of times a day (0 mpg). I haven't had many highway miles lately. I am also considering cleaning the MAF.

The EGR tube isn't too bad to clean. You will only need to remove the IACV. Just make sure you get a new IACV gasket and both upper and lower EGR gaskets. Throttle bottle cleaner will eat up all of that sludge. If you're ambitious, you should clean the upper intake plenum too. I'm sure there is plenty of carbon deposits in there as well. Good luck.

Chevron techron is the best fuel system treatment/cleaner on the market. I run a bottle every month.

If u use it, it does eveything on the back of the bottle it claims.

I made a thread about this. the first time i used it, i swear i was gettin 30mpg highway, as incredulous as it sounds. Its good stuff man.

My boy had a CEL for a bad o2 sensor on his camry for a month. Told him to run some chevron techron and his light went off after running half a tank. hasnt been back since and that was 6 months ago

Sounds just like my max... still trying to decide where to start with it. I figured I would just pull apart the whole air intake manifold and clean it all out replacing sensors and hoses where it needs it. But this is an extreme task for someone not used to being under the hood, lets put it this way I have to go out and buy a ratchet/wrench set to do this. Anyone in KC that can help? haha

I have used Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner before and Gumout Regane.
Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner is no longer sold in British Columbia. Last May I ran a bottle of Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner and within 10 miles got a CEL for a fuel injector. I had to replace a fuel injector and will never use that product again. I use Chevron gas all the time, however.

Well, I am not going to get around to cleaning my EGR tube this weekend. As soon as I do I will let you guys know what I find and whether or not my code comes back.

On the subject of fuel treatment, I have never used Chevron Techron. I do, however, use Lucas fuel treatment once every couple of months or so. I have never really noticed any significant improvement. I have always been a little hesitant of putting anything but gas in my tank, but have always heard good things about Lucas. What do you guys think?

Well, I was on my way home from work today and my SES light went off. What's up with that? I was thinking that once the light came on, it stayed on until clearing the codes. I checked the codes when I got home and I got 0505, which means no codes. I still plan on cleaning the EGR soon. What do you think?

Dont belive theres a 0400 code. 0401= IAC sensor circuit fault

Some codes will clear if the problem they indicate is not repeated within a certain number of driving cycles.

Wow, really? Mine threw 0302 shortly after I got it (at around 216K), when it had a small flex-pipe leak. Replaced the flex pipe, super quiet again, code went away on its own and stayed away for 2000+ miles. I've been noticing a little leak again about halfway back, isn't noticeable unless you rev the engine while idling, but it threw the code again.

I think my plan is going to be to fix this leak, see if the code clears, if not, I'll tackle the EGR project. I've been dreading dealing with that, it doesn't exactly sound like a lot of fun! It would be very cool if the exhaust leaks are what has been causing it. Stupid New England road salt!
