Car Won't Shift Out Park and Can't Find Part

Another new thread that the search can't answer, besides an unfinished thread from 2003.

I'm able to drive the car round thanks to some ghetto rigging that involves poking a flat head screwdriver at the lock while trying to shift out of park. However, I want this fixed the right way. The brake lights work, so I can't think of any other reason. A mechanic guy that lives in the neighborhood looked at it and said that it may be the "shift lock solenoid", but when I try to search on parts websites, I can't find anything under that name. Could it be any other fuses? Before it got to this point, it would sometimes give me trouble trying to get out park and I had to jimmy it around until it finally moved. Really embarrassing to be sitting there for more than a minute trying to get out a parking lot. Its even embarrassing to even think about taking it to a tint shop or paint shop, or even inspection, and tell them "Oh, you're gonna need this screwdriver to get moving!"

On an unrelated note, the Bose stereo doesn't work either, even though the display lights up with random green lines ever so often. Could that be a fuse too or is it just dead? I can hear the antenna motor whirring when I press the power button, but it doesn't go anywhere because the antenna is broken off anyway.

Check out this page. #28 - Shift lock solenoid & park switch - 34950-2L900 Look for some diagnostic info in the FSM. Could very easily be your problem. Call up Southpoint Nissan and ask for ORG pricing. Probably set you back about 75 bones. You could also junkyard it if you're on a super tight budget. GL!

Don't buy a parts yet. look at the old one and see if its sticky from soda pop spilling or something. could be as simple as a bad connection at the plug too.

Thanks for including the link because I would have no idea where to find that. I thought that was the other booklet that was with the manual.

It is pretty sticky in there, so that could very well be an issue. Some black gunky looking stuff in there from who knows how long ago.

try cleaning it up with simple green and a toothbrush. pull the mechanism and try brake cleaner if need be.

The simple green will work, but it needs to be rinsed off very well and then dried extremely well. Brake cleaner is ok, but it leaves a film. Try to pick up some electric cleaner. It's mostly ether and is safe for electronic components. Kinda expensive, but it has lots of uses. I use it to clean any connectors I disconnect.

About the bose, I have no idea if I am right but I do know most of the issues with the bose are not fuse related, more resistor and solder related.. So I do not think you would get lucky on that one.

Maybe I'll have to order a refurbished one off eBay. I imagine it is just dead and gone anyway. I could op to put another kind of stereo in there, but I'm not too sure yet. Don't feel like going through all those wiring issues.
