My "new" maxima..
Hey everyone I just recently joined this forum after buying my car, I've always owned Nissan's - 4 240's alone - But this is my first Maxima. I picked up a Forest Green with tan cloth 98 Auto GLE, 151k. It's throwing codes for Evap Control System, and Knock Sensor, Needs a rad support and has a shot muffler...sounds bad but here's the kicker, I paid a grand total of 430.00 for the car. Two questions, first any immediate concerns/solutions to the problems I got before I start working on them and Second what do you think, good deal or not, I think I got a pretty good deal here. Here's some pics.

You didn't pay much, so you really can't loose, if your mechanically inclined then you already know, good wrenching. The knock sensor code and evap code should be investigated/solved/repaired immediately, don't wait. The other stuff save for when that's done. As long as there's no real body/chassis rot/corrosion it's worth investing the time/dough.

Yeah the guy I got it from let his teen daughter drive it and she had no clue how to fix things, the first thing I did to the car was rip off this Ed Hardy steering wheel cover with a vengance haha. Yeah the KS I'm not worried about I can order a 30 dollar sensor off ebay and cram my hand in there to fix it, I'm more concerned with the Evap Control System code thats showing up because from what I hear it's pretty much a jackpot code and I want it gone.

Is it just throwing a generic evap code, or something specific? My sister's is flashing the VCVBV; it's like an $80 part but it's right behind the bumper cover, easy to access and replace, which I'll do when I get back. It doesn't affect the car besides the code: unless I'm mistaken, that valve is mostly used so the car can confirm that the evap system is working. You'll fail emissions, but that's it.
You can also drive without doing the KS, as my sister is also doing. It'll slow you down and take a hit on your mileage, but the spark is pretty heavily retarded, so you won't do any damage.
Seems like a deal for <$500. Only one spot of rust and two codes is a pretty good haul.

Yeah as far as I know it's just throwing the two codes, I should double check to make sure but when I tested it, it was just flashing the KS code and Evap Control System codes nothing specific. I just got the car and have my 07 Camry as a DD so fixing the KS now is no big deal. Yeah the only rust on the car aside from the rad support is the two front fenders down where they connect to the bumper, otherwise it's rust free so I'm gonna search some junkyards and see if I get lucky and score some with the same paint. Other than that I see a damn good deal for under 5--.

GLE's have auto temp control and yours has a manual unit. They also always have leather but seats can be swapped alot easier then the temp control.

0705 and 0304. I sat there and watched it for a min to make sure I was reading it right. When I looked it up on the sticky I got KS code, and Evap Control System. If KS doesnt throw a code how could I have gotten the code?

yea, knock sensor wont make your check engine lite come on. the evap could have tripped the knock sensor, or your knock sensor could be cracked like mine was. get a knock sensor off ebay for $20, you will save a few hundred that way

the fender rust is negligible to me only cosmetic, and the rad support i can do I know my way around a mig welder, its the evap control sys code that worries me since there's so many possible causes of it. plus i need a drivers side p. brake cable now since the boot split and it's siezed. :'( but thats a easy fix. i'll take a trip to the j. yard and hopefully get some matching fenders and the cable. *prays*

I recently had to purchase an EVAP purge cut valve for my code, unfortunately it was the generic 1447 one. But my valve was CLEARLY broken. Before I bought it I search relentlessly through all the threads, there is a lot of info in here about evap codes and write ups for checking them. good pics too. BTW 80 bucks for that plastic valve.... [sigh] I hate loving my car sometimes.

agree. fix the evap first. might eliminate the ks code.
