thats weird how we all have different sizes. im just trying to figure out exactly how much they hold. i didnt look at the gallons when i last filled it cause it still had a quarter tank.
about what MPG is that if i got 435 miles till the fuel light came on.

It's not very precise to judge the amount of fuel used by when the light comes on. A much simpler method is fill up your tank and reset your trip odometer, drive for a couple hundred miles, then fill up your tank again. The amount of gas put in your tank the second time will be equal to the amount used since the last fuel up. Because you reset your trip odometer as you were leaving the gas station after the first fill up, the distance driven on that amount of fuel will be equal to the number of miles show on the trip odometer. Divide the number of miles driven by the amount of fuel used to get miles per gallon.

iv'e never had to put in more than 16 gallons, even with the low fuel light on! but i do beleive it is an 18.5 gallon tank

i filled up my car today and on nothing but pure in town driving(and driving the hell outta it) i filled it up with 13.3 gallons and i only had 250 miles on what i had used..but my gas gauge is stuck in the full position so i cant tell how low it was.. (i just ordered another cluster from teaner) so that i can have a non-chihuahua-having a seizure tach.. seriously i showed my buddy the car the other day and i had the bose HU just put in and he asked me if i wired it up to the radio to flicker lol

I thought the same thing until the same thing happened to me last week.

QFT. It doesn't matter how big the tank is.
Math is your friend!

Don't come around and try to gas me up I like runnin' on E
But for real I run on 1/4 tank, E and under all the time, I know its probably not the best, but there must be a pretty descent sized reserve gas tank. And I would definitely bet that some gas stations jip you on gas, I know some ppl in the business lol... And have heard stories. So unless you measure it yourself don't trust the pump.

Fuel tank capacity isn't really a major selling point for cars, don't really see why Nissan would have to lie about it. However, If you have dented tank, that might reduce capacity.

Stories are for kids.
The variance of the fuel dispensed, including adjustments by the ATC, is MUCH less than the variables involved in consumer based MPG calculations.

The pick up is at the bottom of the tank regardless of the volume of fuel; there is no floating pickup i.e. it's always sucking off the bottom.

i've gone through this before.
my 3rd gen you can drive a day and a 1/2 with the a/c and hard driving, with the gas light on.
the q45 the same thing.
the 4th gen.
i get 11 miles before i'm out.
and when i put gas back in...lets say 3 gallons worth, it ends up at the 1/4 mark.
the same thing would apply to the 3rd gen, if i let the light come on and drive about 10-15 miles.
then i knew something was wrong when my dad (who has a 97) and kevin who has a 98 drove for about 40 miles while on e.

This thread is retarded. As ajm8127 said, it's just simple math. Don't they teach division in elementary school anymore?
On a related note I changed my fuel filter after driving to Dallas last week. I filled up the next day and calculated about 23 mpg for that tank. I filled up a few days ago and got over 27 mpg from the last tank with nearly identical driving. If you haven't changed your fuel filter in a while or like don't know when (or if ) it was last changed like me...it can be well worth the effort.

My friend has a 98 max with 230k+ and hasnt changed his fuel pump, or anything liek that and he runs on 1/4 every week. Im not saying its a good thing to do, just stating how awesome Maximas are.

The tank size has nothing to do with finding your MPG. To calculate your MPG, simply fill your car till the trigger stops and RESET your Trip. Then drive for a few days until you have 1/2 a tank or 1/4 or whatever, Then fill it up again. Now take the miles you drove (on your trip) and divide it by the number of gallons that it took to refill the tank.
Example: Lets say you drive 225 miles and then it takes 9.46 gallons to refill it.... 225 / 9.46 = 23.78 MPG
Good Luck!
96 SE 5-Speed Manual... Little bit here and there...

so if i got 435 miles out of full tank even know i think i only pumped in 16 gallons and im sure it was empty then should i do 435 divided into 16 or 18.5? lol i know our gas gauges go REALLY low i've had mine way under the E line and never ran out lol.
#34
What exactly does "empty" mean?
Sounds to me like you used 16 gallons to go 435 miles.
