96 hard shifting auto

I have a 96 max with 160k on the clock, the transmission was rebuilt at 100k from a 98 and now Im experience leaking of the fluid and a harsh 1st to 2nd shift. Could the low fluid contribute to this? And what types of fluids should I use, so many people have said lucas transmission fix and others say seafoam transtune. Opinions or experiences would be greatly apprieciated. I also checked the fluid and cannot get an accurate reading and the fluid is a clear red.

thanks

Yaas, low fluid can be part of your problem. How fast does it leak? Can you drive 1-2 days without it getting below FILL line? Best way to get an accurate reading is to clean stick, put it in without twisting around, take out real quick and hold level immediately. I've owned 25+ cars and never had an issue with any, including my current 98 Max auto ... it's not the trans. There can be other causes for the hard shift, such as the shift solenoids or crud in the trans, but if the rebuild lasted 60k it's probably been driven bad. Search on this site for trans problems, I've seen lots like this in the past few weeks.

PS - I forgot to add, DON'T use trans additives like Lucas or Seafoam ... unless you've given up on the trans and plan to replace it soon. Additives either 'clean' the trans too well or 'gum it up' beyond repair. Trans shops love the stuff . . keeps them in business, when just a trans fluid change could solve the problem. Like I said - Search!

I just used SeaFoam trans tune with positive results. I knew as soon as I poured half the bottle in it would start to break down the AT fluid. I drove it about 50 miles than drained and dropped the pan. Put in Mobil 1 ATF and the car is shifting much better. Not sure how much of an affect trans tune made. But a way to save some money is but from Advance Auto Parts online and use code ES123 for $20 off $50 purchase than I just picked up in store.
