R34, melted corner section after corner light mod.

I did the brighter corner light mod in my R34's by cutting of the nub and putting the bulb in backwards. I noticed some burning smell and took a look and the bulb melted a portion of the corner section (right behind the bulb) of the housing. I since bought a second pair of R34 ( that's a long story ) but now Im afraid to do the brighter corner mod again, I don't want it to melt this time.

I think it was a defect in the housing itself since the corner bulb was pretty close to the housing. Im sure the bulb was correctly in place. It doesn't seem to be the case with the new housing though. Anyone else experience this?

Even the stock corner lights had the tendency to melt.

well the bulb does get hot, and with it even brighter, it gets hotter. so. i'd say its the mod that affects the light, and the harness wiring also gets hot due to more current demanded constantly, and think its not worth doing.

Hmmm that's strange, I had the mod on stock housing for years and it never melted. The only thing that happened once was the bulb blew out. Other than the stock housing was fine. Problem was with the R 34's.

Yup , actually melted the housing. Im not sure if it was do to the bulb being to close to the housing (defective r 34's) or if the extra wattage and heat did it. The new R 34's I have seem to have more space between the bulb and housing. I wanna see if anyone else had this problem.

yeah thats what happened to mine. they got so hot they melted the reflecter then shattered inside. had to open them up and what a pain but i think it was just the cheap ebay bulbs because the bulbs i have now have been in my car for over 2 years now. you running normal stock bulbs?

Im was running bulbs from autozone at the time, regular amber. On the new set of R 34's Im using some amber bulbs (from ebay lol) but they look chrome on the outside. Im running them at stock power for now though.

Really!? Did you just put the bulb in back wards? What types of bulbs are you using?

I think i figured out why my last R34 set melted after the corner light mod. On my last set I spray painted the chrome reflector surface black and I think that made the section absorb the heat rather than reflect any heat or light. I went ahead with the corner light mod again but this time left the chrome reflector alone. No melting or smell of plastic burning after an hour of driving. So I guess that was the problem. Just for anyones knowledge that cares.

I did the mod too for about half a year on the stock corner lamp, and everything was fine. But then I changed back to putting the bulb in normally because to me, having the corner lamps extremely bright and the side markers not AS bright looks weird and uneven to me.

But I could have ordered LEDs or something to make the side markers brighter and even everything up but I was too lazy

Use some LEDs and you won't have that problem since they don't get as hot.

They have been fine so far, I did the mod yesterday and no signs of melting in the new housing so far .
LeDs in the corners hmmmm I guess, I really like the bulbs I'm using now, they are chrome and light up Amber. So they blend in well with the corner section.

I have had the corner light mod for a about a year now and have had absolutely no melting of my housing.

Perhaps I dont have a high wattage bulb? Stock bulbs....

Once you do the swap the bulbs will run at a higher wattage, that why there's two elements inside the bulb when you look at it. Im guessing you didn't paint the corner section of the head lamp?

Running chrome bulbs at 35 w corner bulb mod

Well about a week now running the higher wattage and no melting. I think its safe to say it wont melt anything this time around. I do notice some fading of the chrome finish with the bulbs Im using. They are starting to loose some of the chrome finish. Damn ebay cheapies, anyone know of some good chrome bulbs that won't fade?

corner portion of r34 melting

update on my headlights... I just checked the reflector portions of the corners the other day and both corner portions of the R34's are melting behind the bulb. Im surprised im the only one having this problem. I guess I cant run my corners at 35 w then. Im going to put my led corner boards back in anyway, screw the bulbs.
