How do you "drive" a automatic?

I was wondering if there was a special way to actually drive a maxima.
as in if i was doing drag racing:
would i just floor it and find traction?
Gradually smash on the gas?
or do the "shift" thing from 1 thru drive?

I find it that I have alot of hiddent torque and better traction by gradually smashing on the gas pedal. Never failed me against any V8's yet... My 96 SE also isnt equiped with traction control so I can have all the fun I want.

i remember seeing a thing on here one time of this thing you can install on your automatic where it basically turns your 4th gen transmission into a manumatic and it uses your cruise control buttons to do it. you shift with the cruise control buttons. i was actually trying to find it before i read your post but i cant find it on here anymore, so if anyone could find it, i think it would help you alot in what you are trying to do.

There was two different systems, the first was the manumatic. This was designed and built by a Maxima owner but only a limited number of units were ever built.

The new units are built by Latent Solutions and are called suprastick.

yea but there was one that was actually on this website maxima.org and it used the cruise control switches to control it. and it would only work if the automatic shifter was in "D". it even had a gear indicator to show what gear you were in. like i said, ive been trying to find it but i cant! it was like a guide with pictures to show how to do it!! so if anyone comes across it or remembers where its at please let me know!!!

This is a neat mod....but is a little too complicated for my tastes....I guess I will just manually row through the gears if I feel compelled to...

I find that going through the gears is the best. Plus, its a little better on your transmission as well.

At WOT your auto is shifting at full line pressure.
The drop resistor mod does absolutely nothing at that point.

The only thing that mod does is give you a hard abnormal shift under normal driving conditions. A good way to destroy your tranny and motor mounts.

If you want to dish out some G's on a new tranny, do this.

In the end it is just not worth it.

you've got a **** load of post so it seems silly doubting you but ..

you would use a WOT switch if you do the dropmod so won't affect normal driving

and I think the shifts were harder and faster with the DR disconnected when it shifted at WOT.. I think it only shifts at 80% odd with it connected at WOT

+1

But IIRC the Drop Resistor mod is effective w/ a WOT switch, because the Auto tranny doesn't shift @ full pressure ALL the time when @ WOT.

And I haven't known anyone who reasonably uses 1-2-D destroying their transmission.

Funny thread. Do the drop resister mod only at WOT. Yes it makes a difference. Search the 1/4 mile forum for launching techniques. If done right autos can be pretty quick. Check sig for details.

you can also modulate the gas pedal, ease it in so its under part throttle so it gets grip then push further for the kickdown .. my Cefiro had traction control with a Power | Auto | Snow switch .. so you could push the gas a bit harder/further down and power mode would kick in and keep the car in gear longer so you would get more torque than if it changed up on you
