Need Advice On Starting Mod Process

For the record yes im a noob. Okay so I know these 4 things are all a part of your typical modding process...Cold Air Intake..High Flow Catalytic Converter. Y Pipe(headers)..Catback Exhaust System. But what I wanted to know was...more so on the last 3 items...Is there a certain order that i have to follow? Like if I do one before the other would it make it harder to do the next item? Basically in your advice what order should i go in?

I see people mentioning maintenance...What kind? I know Spark plugs and air filter? More?

1. Y Pipe
2. Catback if you want it louder, not much gain in hp, but gain in noise
3. Intake if you want it louder, not much gain in hp, but again, gain in noise
4. Don't bother with hi-flow cat

For me, I'd get y-pipe, then some suspension goodies, then wheels.

I would say to get the maintenance done first b4 you start with performance.

I like my air intake (cool sound) for about $100.
My audio $700 4 speakers and deck
My y pipe, then my catback were $200+$350.
My 20" wheels $600
My car is awesome.
I noticed a high RPM upgrade with the air intake, and morso with the y pipe and catback, and catback did help a little.

4. Kool lights = Projectors + HID and LED tail lights

Honestly it depends on yur budget. Im cheap when it comes to mods, but i spend willingly and generously when it comes to maintenance. But since we talkin mods, i will assume that u have already done maintenance and got the car runnin right.

If you havent already done so, u have to read Kevlo911 FAQ stickie. He got great info on mods and which are worthwhile, with sound clips, explanations and all.

So...onto the mods

THe necessities to have:

1) tunes / sounds
2) good flowing muffler
3) intake
4) Tint
5) strut tower bar
6) lights
7) Yellow top Duralast Battery

Then if u still want more

8) Big 3 elecrtical upgrade
9) y pipe
10) body modifications / kits
11) suspension
12) wheels

THen if u still got any money left:

13)UDP
14) Fidanza flywheel
15) STS
16) 00vi

after that its whateva u can imagine / innovate. welcome to org

Best bang for your buck there.

Don't bother with the intake, the only thing you'll get is noise and poor throttle response. The only exhaust mod should be the Y pipe. Any other exhaust work is only going to help if your boosted.

Id got for the Y pipe first, Best bang for your buck
Then go for the suspension
then look into a variable intake manifold

dont bother doing an intake unless your gonna do a cold air intake into the fender.

High flow cat-->worthless
Catback-->good
Ypipe-->great

Ypipe is the best bang for the buck performance mod, period. Get this first, then the catback if you wish. However, a variable intake manifold (MEVI or 00VI) coupled with a JWT ECU with raised rev limiter would be a better choice than the catback (although you'll have to save up a little more money to accomplish this).

im going throug the same thing! sept im not exactly a n00b...
these are what people recommended for me.

performance
1. y-pipe! everybody can agree on that one. best bang for buck. im going with cattman hearders and y if i can get ahold of them!
2. 00vi for some great gains! also, most people do the jwt with higher redline. <-- thats the route im taking also.

exterior
1. everybody loves a stillen lip kit!
2. cant go wrong with some r34 headlights and clear bumper lights, or if your more a fan of the AE'd look! and some led tails or atleast red/clears!
3. wheels and brakes! <-- those can get pricey. not to mention if you get wheels you wanna get a drop!

suspension
1. coilovers <-- ksports seem to get good reviews. dont quote me though, i just read reviews lol.
2. for the price, most people like the subframe collars
3. fstb
4. poly bushings

thats sumwhat the order im going in... just my suggestion... im nocking out performance first, then looks, then suspension. i like the way the SE handles already so im not to worried about it just yet. what year, colors, and trim is yours? and options?

Figure out first what you want to accomplish...looks or performance. I took the approach of what needed replaced first, and continued down that road replacing what was logical based on age and in need of maintenance. It's addictive if you have a decent budget. If performance is what you're after, don't waste a ton of money on the small stuff that will yield very little gain. To D1Max2NV's point, go for a power adder like supercharger or turbo. You'll spend more, but get a ton more gains.

THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK EVERYONE. I think I have a clear idea of where to go with this. EVERYONE AGREES MAINTENANCE...But just to make sure im not missing anything as far as whats involved in that. Can some of you give YOUR input on what "Maintenance" consist of? Like i said the basics i know is oil change and like spark plugs. Anything else? And ive got mixed signals on using synthetic and non synthetic oil.
Thanks in advance for the info. Im sure this thread will help other people new to modifying/working on their car.

I was in the same boat you're in now. The only mods I've really done are Audio, which I did myself, and then Tint, which I got someone to do it for me. I had some maintenance problems when I started out but they're gone and I can do what I please to the car. I got my car at 170,000 miles so I decided not to switch to synthetic. Good luck with your mods in the future

What i would do is take it to a trusted shop and have them look over EVERYTHING then work your way down the list.

I was also in the same boat. I made the following changes:

1. 4 New Monroe Sensatrac Struts (Currently $80 rebate if you buy 4);
2. Moog Mounts;
3. Moog Front Inner/Outer Tie Rods (Front L&R)
4. Front Sway Bar Energy Bushings;
5. 4 Brembo Rotors;
6. Akebono Front Pads/Wagner Rear Pads;
7. Front Control Arm Kits (Front L&R) with new bushings and bearings;
8. Moog Sway Bar Links;
9. Nissan OEM Air Filter;
10. L/R Rear Calipers;
11. E-break;
12. NGK Platinum-G Spark Plugs;
13. Bosch Distance Plus High-Performance Oil Filter;
14. Valvoline Max Life 5w-30 Synthetic Blend
15. Gold Duralest Battery

The car rides like a new car now. I am shocked at the improvement in the overall ride and performance, handling etc etc.... I was putting this German Castrol 0W-30 made in Germany. My mech recommended 5w-30 due to car has 197K miles. I got 90% of this maintenance/mod info from stickies. Read the stickies folks. IT WORKS!!

Next mods will include exhaust (y-pipe etc), body kit and maybe a Rear Sway Bar -Addco 655.

This exhaust setup sounds real nice on youtube....No fart sounds, Very subtle growl.

The cheapest brembo rotors I can find are like 550 for all 4. Any one know of a cheaper site for brembo rotors?
