Could we add this question to the stickies please

What is the Biggest brake upgrade that you can fit under a stock 97-99 SE rim?

The J30 i know will fit (the rotor diameter is the same only thicker, you just have to play around with clearancing the factory torque member or use the j30 loaded caliper and shave about 3mm off the rotor). What about a 5.0 or 5.5? I have read that they will fit on a 16" rim....but not specifically the 97 SE 16" rim.

sorry if im beating a dead horse here....

I'm pretty sure the 5.5 will fit under the stock se 16's. Since I saw a 5.5 the other day with 4th gen se 16's on it.

You'd be surprised, the stock 5.5 brakes will fit under a 15" wheel. Yes, the wheels still spun freely.

Too bad I never got a clearance picture, but it was certainly close. Here's the closest thing I have:

you do not have to shave anything off the diameter of the J30 rotor to use a J30 caliper.

so if these will fit under the stock rims what is better the j30 with thicker rotors and 2 pistons or the 5.5 with a larger diameter single piston caliper?

A bit of clearancing and grinding on the stock 4th gen torque member to fit the j30 or enlarging the bolt holes for the 5.5?

opinions?
