checking motor mounts?

So it appears the flex section on my factory y-pipe is on its way out. It rattles pretty frequently when driving. So it look like I will be forced to upgrade my y-pipe. But before I do so, I want to make sure it wasn't tired motor mounts that caused the flex pipe to fail. Last thing I want to do is install a new y-pipe and the flex section fails again in no time.

What is the easiest way to test the motor mounts? It kind of hard to tell sometimes by just looking at them.

mine are going out also, i cant find a good way to know on our cars for sure so im just buying new Mounts to be safe(200k) my engine moves about 1-1;1/2 inches when i rev so i think that means there on their way out.

on my mothers van i knew they were busted because while i was changing her spark plugs the engine rocked back and forth with almost no force.lol

a good way to see if they are bad is appling a load to them, try having someone move the car from a stop. if they are real bad the motor will really torque around when the motor and trans engages with the wheels. even a good visual inspection will tell you. dry rot, ripping, breakage.
