cloud of blue smoke after parking on a slope!
I happened to park my car on a slope for 3 hours, when I started the car, I saw a cloud of blue smoke showing up in the rear(a cloud!) . I do keep an eye on blue smoke, but that's my first time to see so much blue smoke coming out. (parking on a level plane for a whole night just gives a little bit blue smoke when starting). I parked the car on a slope for a whole night the second day, and saw the cloud of blue smoke again. Can somebody tell me if this gives any clue on where the leak is? piston ring? valve seal?
some basic info: 99 infiniti 30 with 123k, no oil drop on ground, but lose half a quart in 800 miles. The slope was about 30 degree.

its obviously burning oil but i would check the spark plug tube seals.. inspect all the plugs if they porcelain part is covered in oil than the tube seal is the problem.
only a compression/ leak down test will prove engine health...

Thanks, I did replace the spark plugs a month ago, the chambers are very clean, not a single sign of oil leak.
I'm planning to do a compression test, let's see when I take off the coils.
By the way, I read some posts about leak down test, I looks very difficult to diy. Am I missing something? Do I have to take to dealers, without buying expensive special tools, like compressed air.

that kinda reminds me of a 3.5 eating oil. i seen 3.0s eating oil as well.
my freind got a 95 max, and his car smokes when driving from stop, or starting the car. he used to be turbo, so im most likely guessing that its the piston rings.
so yeah, do a compression test and let us know

Bahahaa, Its his kanooter valve..
do the pressure test, and it probably wouldnt be a bad idea to check everyhting involveing oil at this point.. did you mabey get some Reall bad gas? PCV valve letting a TON of oil into your IM?
see, what worries Me is that it only sat 3 hours..

Thanks, could you please explain a little bit more about why you drew this conclusion, I have done some reading on engine mechanics, so what you are going go say will make sense to me.
and what I can do to confirm that? can compression test ?

Thanks, I will do the compression test in the next few weeks, together with the coil resistance check. I'll update after done

thanks!
I replaced PCV valve a month ago with a new autozone one.
Yes, 3 hours sitting caused that much blue smoke. Let me finish the compression test and come back here.

honestly, i defintely put my money on njmaxseltd
A puff of blue smoke upon start up after the car has been sitting indicates worn valve guides and seals, not piston rings.
see, even i get some blue smoke once in a while.. or after the car sits for like 2-3 days....

Hope you fixed your problem! A few days ago my car blew out a cloud of black smoke because of my faulty ignition switch, that would not turn all the way to the crank position, so when I turn my key all the way, the actual switch stops somewhere between ACC and START and so it was start, stop, start, stop, start. Which I believe led the car to be flooded with fuel which explains the black smoke. Sorry for being off topic
I am no Pmohr so I might be wrong, but I guess stuffing tape into the ignition switch either permanently fixed my problem or is only a temporary fix.

Smoke after starting the car is from again worn guides or valve seals. Oil leaks down due to the fact of gravity. Oil can't get from the pan and around the piston rings from being parked on a slope. The car being parked on a slope probably indicates that its coming from one of the rear cylinders i.e. puddling on the piston. Don't rule out the possiblity of a defective AutoZone part. Most of their stuff is cheap Chinese made junk. Try one from the dealer, they're not that much. If all else fails replace muffler bearings. LOL

Have a buddy follow you around for a bit. Smoke on deceleration, ie downshifting or motoring down a long hill indicates loose valve guides or bad seals. Smoke on acceleration indicates worn rings.
FYI worn oil control rings will not always be seen on a compression test. If the motor was neglected by a PO oil control rings could be gunked up with carbon. The oil control rings also have to drain off, and those drains could get plugged with carbon.
