P1335 Code Related to Starter?

My car is still throwing P1335 ever since I got it. I had all Crankshaft Pos and Ref sensors replaced, all O2 Sensors replaced. So after nearly $800 in repairs, I'm still getting the same code except now it shows up only after a hard start. Some threads suggest that hard start with a bad starter can trigger the P1335 code. (Previously the car had no problems starting and threw the P1335 code frequently.) Now it's less frequent but I still get the code on cold hard starts.

I think this is a part I should be able to change out myself. Does anyone have any recommendation for where I can get a replacement starter? This is for a 1997 SE w/ Auto. Thanks a bunch!

well, i am going to ask you if you are seriously asking this question?

you have a few options.

Get the Starter Rebuilt

or go to your local auto parts store and get you a new one.

better yet, go to the pick and pull and see if they have one that will work

Simple answers you could have answered. but i mean hey, we have to start from somewhere.

i'm pretty sure the org would tell you the same thing.

If you can't agree with those options, then i do not know what to tell you man. peace. and good luck.

no, advance starters dont work well in our cars because of the number of teeth. was'nt there a thread about this recently??? rebuilt or oem, pricey but worth it.

In So Cal I tend to find that Autozone has the best prices. The quality of the parts can be debated...but I still tend to prefer it over Kragen and Pep Boys in my area. I'd call around to see who has the best prices though.

It's not your starter. An A32 started wont ever give you any codes. I've gone through 2 of them and neither of them ever let me know.

Check the harness for the CPS. Mine kept giving me the code, and I replaced the sensor, and it didn't help. Turned out the harness was chewed. So, I fixed the harness and kept my starter.

Sorry I wasn't clear...

What I should have asked in the first post was where's the best place to buy the OEM starter without stealership prices (or if there are any good stealerships that sells them lower than others). Thanks for the helpful and unhelpful posts. The CPS harness has been replaced and so has both the CPS Ref and Pos sensor. The code comes on only as a result of a hard start. If the CPS components are faulty, that shouldn't trigger a hard start, will it? Maybe I should just do what the other thread says to remove it and regrease it. I can barely do brakes so I'm not sure if this is something I will be able to tackle on my own.

Do it yourself man. The starter is not very hard to get to. Just take all the intake stuff and it is underneath. I believe you can do it!

i got a 1 month old rebuilt starter if you need it. i'll let it go for a good price but the thing is that im located in the east coast and your in so cal so im assuming that shipping might be pricey. but the starter was purchase brand new rebuilt and i used it for 1 month .. took it out cause my friend gave me a oem used starter. so i decided to switch it and sell this one..

i also got both crank position sensors for 4th gen. if you need them.. PM me..

Other than that .. i suggest if you know a friend or a member that rides on a 4th gen around your way .. swap theirs out onto yours to see if its really the starter. also check your grounds and fuses.

Where did you find the harness? I had to buy an old harness, hack it and then use it.

AutoZone starters are cheap & come with a Lifetime warranty. (we all know what that means )

In the meantime, wack your stater with a mallet and see if it helps (no kidding).

It's a very easy job, 15 - 20 minutes at most. Easier than brakes.

But .. I'm a little uineasy to think that it is your problem ... The code still bothers me.

Your old CPS may have contributed to the death of your starter, I've also had that happen to me.

Cool Cool

Well it looks like a lot of people recommend getting it at autozone because there doesn't seem any preference to the OEM part. Alright, so the reason that I think it has something to do with the starter is that when I first had the car, it threw the P1335 code along with various other codes.

Can anyone recommend a good dealership / shop to get some work done?

I took it to a shop to get the O2 sensors replaced, both Camshaft and Crankshaft pos. sensors replaced. He even re-wired the CPS harness because it still gave codes after the part replacements. Before I left after the completion of the repairs, the mechanic said something about me needing a new starter soon.

So after the car was repaired, there was no code and all was good. 4 months later, now it came back. I searched the forums and found these three threads on P1335:

P0335 P1335 codes after hard start

Need help for fixing starting engine hard

ECU Code 1335

But the thing is that it doesn't give me a hard start all the time. Perhaps only once every 2 weeks and oddly enough, it triggers the code only during a hard start. Before the repair, the code would just appear out of the blue (i.e. while the car was running) I would love a fellow So Cal to help me check the starter but this doesn't seem to happen often enough yet so not sure how helpful it would be.

Now I know the CPS components were changed because before when I had the P1335 code, I would reset it and the code would come back after the ECU had a chance to re-test the component (usually a day or two). It would never pass smog because the ECU was either too recently resetted (not ready for smog test) or the light would be on (thus preventing smog test pass).

Currently, when the light comes on, I reset the the ECU and it stayed off after an entire week and I even took it to get smogged and it passed. The light comes back a few days after that during a hard start.

So what you guys are telling me is that a bad starter would not trigger this code? I'm still pretty confused at this point and you guys have given me enough encouragement to replace the starter so maybe I will just start with that and if that doesn't do anything, then I just don't know... Maybe I should just take the car back to the mechanic? Gosh... such an annoying issue for an otherwise perfect running car.

OEM starter is expensive your better off just getting it rebuilt. I have a 97 and I had mine rebuilt 2years ago for $75 and its working great. It's very easy to get to, i replaced it myself in forty minutes and I had never done it before. Good Luck!

Alright. Last weekend I went to autozone and bought a rebuilt starter. It was $170 and if I bring my old one back, they would give me $40 back. I'm going to drive the car for a few weeks before returning the old starter to see if that is really the culprit. With the new starter, it appears to take a bit longer to start the car though but it could just be all in my head. If the light comes on, then I guess my old starter was good and I could probably resale it for more than $40.

CEL came on again for the same code yesterday. Exactly 1 month. Damnit. Guess starter really wasn't the issue. I have a good starter for sale if anyone wants it. I guess I'm taking her back to the ol' shop.
