Rear BOSE sounds like crap?

I just installed an aftermarket head unit in the max using harness 70-7551 (see here http://forums.maxima.org/audio-elect...nt-thread.html) and the front speakers sound good but the back speakers sound like crap.
-stock BOSE all around(except new head unit)
-Rear speakers checked at .8 ohms
-Fade/balance is good on the head unit.
-BOSE fuse and audio fuse in the fuse block are good
This is the harness that uses the signal from the rca jacks. I got 2 RCA Y splitters and ran both left side speakers to 1 rca on the unit and both right to the other because I only had one set of pre outs. Could that be the problem?

I guess the real question is who has used the 70-7551 harness with success? Also, what head unit did you buy?

Its a crappy little panasonic with a cd player and an aux on the faceplate so it works for me. It was used in my GLE since I bought the car with aftermarket speakers. Now its in the SE with BOSE speakers and the rear speakers sound like crap

Have you visually inspected the rear speakers?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nissan-pathfinder-02-03-04-05-06-07-BOSE-MP3-6-disc-cd_W0QQitemZ350207196983QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCar_Aud io_Video?hash=item5189f9bf37&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245 &_trkparms=72%3A1171|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

except i bought mine for about 130 shipped and installed it myself. very easy install. almost plug and play except you have to jump one wire. the bonus is that it looks stock and its 6 disc in dash. i love it. there is a thread on here about it.

did you do the wiring yourself? or was it professionally installed? no offense, but if you did it yourself and your an amateur with a/v install, check your wiring. if you stripped too much wire while making your connections and bundled it all together, youll have some shorted out connections, and therefore crackly sounding speakers. it happened to me on one of my first stereo installs way back when

Maybe the headunit does not have enough power to feed your rear BOSE speakers. How about getting an amplifier to power them up. Or as what anomaly117 said, maybe you did something wrong with the wirings.

That's exactly what you don't want to do.

+1 on double checking your connections. The rears sounded fine with the last stereo, right? Also you might want to experiment with removing the RCA splitter, and plugging just the fronts and then just the rears into your headunit. Another question is do the rear sound clear at all, like when the Panasonic headunit is turned down?

Define "Sounds like crap." Is it popping, hisssing, or no bass? If it has a pop or a hiss, the outer shielding of the y splitters could be touching ground or each other. If there is no bass, then one of the RCA's in the harness could be out of phase. I've sen many metra harnesses that were wired out of phase.

as long as I have owned the car it hasnt had a radio. I had done some searching on here about bose vs aftermarket speakers and decided that I wanted to hear the factory system on an aftermarket head unit.
When I said it sounds like crap, the background music of the song would totally drown out the vocals. You could barely hear any of the words. There was NO bass in the speakers even with the head unit maxed out. The back speakers you could only hear muffled music coming out. I think I may just have to stop being a cheap bastard and get a new head unit with more than 1 set of preouts.

can anybody elaborate on this? Is it common to have an issue using this harness?

sounds like what i presumed originally. check for frayed wires and connections in the harness. make sure the speakers are oem too, and this previous owner of yours didnt mess with those either.

I was only saying that I wanted to know if there were people using this harness that had success. I'm not saying at all that I think there is a common problem with it. I just think insight from someone using it might be helpful here.

IMHO the harness should work. It only redirect the signal level audio from the preouts to the Bose amp inputs. I don't see why it wouldn't work if properly installed. Thats assuming the the Bose speakers and amplifiers were working properly, as anomaly117 alluded.

I'll just say this once. DO NOT GET THE Metra 70-7551 harness, especially if you get an Alpine HU.

Get the harness that uses the speaker outputs and puts them through a Line Output Converter. It's a scosche adapter OEM3 or OEM4 or something like that. If you search for my thread in the Audio section you'll find it.

It was more for the OP, but I'm glad someone with some experience with that Metra harness posted.
