got me another 4th gen

well, looks like i finally got me a 4th gen just for me. i had one before but gave it to my mom but she got the good one: '96 with over 18x,xxx miles on it like 2-3 years ago. bought for $600 if im correct. bought an extremely low mileage engine for it for $400 swapped it in and gave it to her. now i got my hands on was my friends '97 SE. did an engine swap about 2 years ago on this one. just before thanksgiving '08 he asked for a favor for me to fix his sister's car. so i did and apparently he had already told me that money was an issue but when i was finally done with the job he just gave me his '97 in exchange. the thing is that the engine was making a weird noise so he didn't want to mess with it again. mind you this is the engine i had swapped into it like 2 years ago. so i tow it back home and the next day i pull the engine along with tranny and cross member. i already knew what was the problem and it was the upper timing chain guide that had fallen apart. so since thanksgiving '08 i have been trying to fix this car. all i need now are the chain guides, front main seal, water pump and thermostat. i already replaced the tensioners, timing chains, valve cover gaskets, all vacuum hoses, and upper intake gasket. all parts are being replaced with Nissan OEM parts, expensive but worth it in the long run. don't want to do this again for another while. any thoughts from you guys as to what else i should look for while the engine and tranny is already out?

Wow I'm impressed....you really know your stuff with these cars.

I myself just picked up another 4th gen that I got for $800. Its a work in process, but i have it running good...it just needs a bit of bodywork, and a good detail.

So now I have a 95, 98, and a 99. two outa the three are 5spd.

QNO_A32: i would do that swap but i can rarely find a DE-K down here. now my 3rd gen is most likely going to get the 3.5L special but need to hold off on that to get my 4th gen running.

Snypa: thanks.

TLMNICK: well, Nissan has grown on me a lot and so i got my family to like them as well. my '97 just needs the motor and tranny to be swapped back in, leather needs to be redone, and some minor body work. plus i LOVE me some Maxima's!!!

I wish I was that good with mechanics....to just be able to swap out motors.

I'm all about the electronics part of things.

swapping motors ain't rocket science. i rather do engine swaps than electrical work.

i still have to order the chain guides, water pump, front main seal, and thermostat. once i have all those parts i will be able to swap the 3.0 back into my 4th gen. looks like its going to be awhile once i get these parts. funds are low right now.

ITS ALIVE!!! just finished it right now and it runs like a champ. couldn't get a new thermostat cuz i didn't have enough money to buy it but i did get the most important ones which were the internal parts. i replaced all the vacuum hoses and valve cover gaskets as well. i will try and post up pics of this since i couldn't while in the process of working on it.

Nice!

How did you figure it was the chain guide? I think I might have the same problem, but not too sure. I do hear this slurping sound coming from that side so I'm not sure. I've driven over 10k mires so far since I've owned it and no problem so far. Is it bad to drive on it?

well, i already knew off the bat that it was the upper timing chain guide cuz you would hear chain slap once the engine is idling. it was loud so i just towed it to my house. the sound that you are referring to makes me wonder since i don't have the slightest idea what it could be. don't think its a guide since you would hear the chain slap but i may be wrong. check your power steering pump? checks for leaks but then that wouldn't be a slurping sound but more like a whining sound.

well, here you go guys:

interior needs work but a car that i got for free and $600 invested into the motor. can't complain . i still need to take care of minor things like a new air box and some trim pieces on the dash along with brakes and rotors, new wheel studs and some other little things and clean the inside up as well. all this weekend i've been cleaning the outside and the engine bay after i swapped the motor in.

sweet deal, didn't want to get another motor cuz i would have done the same with the other motor by doing the timing as well. all the parts were bought at the dealer.

yea oem parts ftw, I usually only like to get oem for stuff like that as well. When I did my pathfinder timing belt, most of the stuff was oem as well but not completely due to small pocket

well, i test drove the car yesterday and it needs an alignment but i noticed that shifting into 2-3 gears there is a slight vibration while moving coming from the front. i noticed that when i dropped the motor and tranny the tranny leaked out auto fluid but once i swapped everything back in i poured new ATF fluid into tranny about 2 1/2 quarts worth but im pretty sure it needs more fluid so i'll check that later on. now the check engine light came on and i scanned it and it gave me these codes:

P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor A - Bank 1 Circuit Malfunction
P0100 - MAF or VAF A Circuit Malfunction
P0135 - 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P1105 - Manufacturer Control Fuel Air Metering.

any thoughts on those codes guys?
