knock sensor related

alright so busted up my hand and changed out my knock sensor and the sub harness....anyways when i had the old one out i was looking over the bolt that screws the sensor down...i noticed something on it and i wasnt sure if it is normal....basically there is this (what looks like one at least) black electrical tape taped around it..not the entire length of the bolt but maybe 30% of its length....was wondering if this was normal???

here is an illustration...sorry i didnt have a camera while i was doing this

I bet the last time the KS was replaced, they used the tape to hold the bolt in place while centering the KS over the threads. No fear of it falling out somewhere in the engine compartment or between the cylinder banks that way.

There are many threads covering what tools are the best to do the job.

I prefer 8, 10, and 12mm sockets. Removing the UIM/LIM, and actually installing the KS properly.

When I did my knock sensor I managed it pretty easily. I used a 1/4in ratchet with the right size socket (can't remember offhand) I maneuvered the ratchet into the block and then rested it. I repositioned my hand and then wiggled the ratchet into place by the feel of the socket slipping over the bolt. Once it was on I ratcheted until it was loose, took the ratchet back out, stuck my hand in there and took the bolt the rest of the way out.

That was the second time I have done a 4th gen KS. It was on my 95GXE.

First time was on my 98SE I basically did the same thing except I used a 3/8in ratchet and it was much more difficult to do. Also I had to grease my hand up to squeeze into the block. I remember it being a much tighter fit than what it was on my 95 but that was a few years ago and it was my first time so who knows.

Definitely go with the 1/4in ratchet though it is much easier.

The electrical tape?

As long as the KS is still grounded, it shouldn't be an issue.
