Average Temp. for your Maxima

I was curious what the avg. temp is for these cars to run? Fixin to get a 95 Max, and the temp gauge is just under the halfway mark. Since the gauges don't have the temps, so I wanted to know in case theirs a temp problem.

While driving, temps never went up. Radiator has a top leak though, want to make sure it never overheated.

Mine is always just under the 1/2 mark at operating temps.

If it overheats, the temp gauge will max out. The stock water temp gauges suck, they just give you a very broad reading. It's more of a 'Cold/Okay/Overheating' gauge, really.

If it's anywhere in the middle half of the gauge, you're fine.

Mine stays in the middle too. But it's starting to get slightly higher.

Yeah, I've always been curious about my temp gauge. Almost thought mine was broke. It does show cold, and slowly goes up as the car warms up, but after its warmed up, in cold days, hot days, stuck in rush hour, driving fast, or slow, etc. its always like just below the middle like everyone else. And my scangauge shows around 185 or so, I think.

Ive noticed theres a tiny white dot sorta close to the round part of the needle and at operating temp my needle stays exactly over that little white dot. Like everyone else i think your car would have to get really hot in order for the gauge to get to the H. Like 260F or something.

I am new to the forum but I seem to be having a problem with my temp as well. I have a '99 maxima and my cooling fans run on low continuously after the car warms up. I have changed the thermostat (2), radiator, CTS, and water pump. Is this normal and if not please help. If you cut the heat on hi the fans will cut off after @ 5 min.

Dude, what's your water temp gauge say? You can't really judge if the car is over heating by listening to the rad fans unless you know when they are supposed to come on. Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't think your have that much experience, hell, neither do I.

Both my hardbodies had a similar water temp gauge, and both operated normally right in the middle. The same is true of my max, right in the middle. I don't actually care what the absolute temperature is, as long as my gauge stays in the middle, I'm happy.

My guage is reading normal unless you put it in a strain say up a big hill then it goes up some. No I don't have much experience with a maxima but I do not think the cooling fans running all the time is normal. My water temp at idle is running @ 205 deg the fans do not cut off until 196 deg. I do know that I have compared it to 2 other maximas the same year model and their fans do not run continuously.

Interesting. I would think that the fans would run when the car was not moving, and only if needed once the car was moving. And you would not want to run them too much, as it would lower the water temp below the optimal point.

If you are concerned about you fans running too much, maybe you could check your coolant temp sensor. I know you just changed it, but look at the FSM and see if it is actually in spec. Also I'm not sure if there would be a difference between FED and Cali spec, which means just a straight comparison between same models of the same years could yield different results.

IMO, I wouldn't give it a second thought if my temperature gauge was reading within operating range.

Normal warmed up coolant temps is around 190F - 195F (as was posted earlier). Both fans will run if using the air conditioner ( or in defroster setting), or if additional rad cooling is called for (towing, long hills, racing, etc).

Is your defroster on? If the defroster is on, the A/C is on, thus the fans will run non-stop.

This is absolutly true Fans should not run all the time if air is off. Id check the coolant temp sensor first. That is what tells the computer to turn the fans on anyway.

I have already changed my coolant temp sensor as well as thermostat, radiator and water pump. My fans still run with the A/C--Defrost off.

Maybe the cooling fan relays are sticking on or something?? There located under the hood btw. Try checking the relays next.

Already checked the relays--all 3. One thing I have noticed different is the thermostats that I have put in do not have the bypass hole in the disc. Mabee this increases flow or removes trapped air--Ideas?

I bought my 99 SE this past summer. Since the cold weather started, i've noticed while driving on the highway/interstate that my temp gauge sometimes barely makes it above the cold mark. Seems like the colder it is outside the worse it gets. When I get into town at stop lights and such, it reads normal. Could this be my thermostat?
