Troubleshooting starting issue, HELP
I know I know there has been a billion starting threads. I have searched and read through a lot of them. My buddy has a 95 Maxima which has turned into a huge lemon. Everything was fine when he bought it about a year ago and then about a couple months in everything has gone too hell.
When he goes to start it, it cranks and cranks, and sometimes makes a loud bang noise, it backfires, etc etc once you start giving it some gas about 3/4 and blipping it and such it finally fires too life.
Now once running it runs fantastic. Idle is a slightly rough, but it pulls hard through the gears.
Talked with a couple mechanics I use to work with and they thought it could be the starter. So I replaced it. That's a no go, still the same thing. I check the codes. It's throwing a Crankshaft Position Sensor (ref) code. I replace it, that's a no go. I replace the ignition switch, NOPE!! I have swapped camshaft position sensors and ignition clutch relays with my car, still does the same thing. TB is clean, the IACV is clean. You can hear the fuel pump prime when turned to the ON position.
Other things that have been replaced before this issue: Fuel filter, spark plugs, are brand new. My thinking is it has to do with the clutch/flywheel. He had his clutch replaced not too long ago and never had this issue up till then. When we go to start it the tach shoots up to 2,500rpm and bounces around in that area. I have never seen that before on any other car that has had starting issues.
Anybody give me some ideas before we give up and just start parting this POS out.

So did you ground the starter or not?
That's when the grounding issues happen, when the trans is dropped. The surfaced need to be sanded down to get a clean ground, since that's where the starter's ground connection is.
Honestly this is the first thing suggested in most any starting thread.

I didn't do the clutch install, but yes I looked at the ground it looked good too me. I'll talk with the dude that did the clutch install and ask him if he did indeed sand it down, but it looked good too me.

You can't see the mating surfaces of the block and trans by just 'looking at it', without dropping the trans.
Run a ground wire from the battery to one of the starter mounting bolts.

grounded starter, not the issue.
He took the car to a shop, they checked the fuel pressure and everything else they could think of. They couldn't figure it out only thing they came up with is that it could be the autozone starter causing the issue. But I just don't find that too be true.
The car has not thrown a code since I replaced the crank position sensor and reset the ECU.
Any other ideas I'm running out of them and it's sad when a shop can't tell you anything. Coolant temp sensor? Even though I would think a code would be thrown.
