About 6 months ago i changed my rear pads and rotors. Ever since i changed them Ive been having a problem with the e-brake. It works correctly but after i take it off and begin to drive there is a really bad smell after about 3 minutes, it smells like burning brake pads. I don't feel any resistance but it definitely smells like burning brake pads to me. If i park my car for a few hours and then drive it again its gone. I haven't used my e-brake for a long time because of that issue, but i put it on the other day just to see if the problem persisted and the same thing happened.


Any ideas about what could be wrong?

Broken return spring on the calipers, or corrosion causing the cable to stick.

The cables tend to be damaged where they follow the trailing arms by improper lifting, if water or debris enters the sheath it can cause the cables to stick up.

well my e-brake doesnt stick enough so i can feel it, and it was during warm weather. i thought it may be a different problem. but thanks for pointing me in the direction of some more knowledge concerning an issue like mine!

So its possible there's some stuff in/ around the e-brake cable which doesn't allow the brake to release entirely. Ill check it out again, i looked around when it first happened, but didn't see any debris. Luckily i have an automatic so i usually dont use the emergency brake, but its nice to know i can.

Have a trusted shop take apart & lube the rear brake hardware.
I just did that two weeks ago. BEEEEEAAUUUTIFUUL!

Sorry, I didn't mean to jump to conclusions and get angry. The bracket that connects it to your rear calipers can still be corroded even though you aren't in cold weather. It also could be your rear calipers.

i had a problem getting the pads back in when i was replacing them. if i remember correctly i had to take the caliper off and screw? something back in. I had that problem on both sides.
