Car not starting: Key issue
Writing this more as a note in case anyone has a similar issue or can give me feedback. It happened to me twice.
Recently, my car refused to stay on after a start. The engine would start and moments later, it would shut off. I tried both keys and eventually it refused to start all together, just cranking.
I thought it was the IAC, but giving the engine gas to hold up the rpm's did nothing, the car would stall. I checked the IACV anyway. Checked the grounds and some other sensors that the .org members suggested to other people having similar issues. Everything was working fine, I read the stickies and tried a lot of stuff.
Had to tow it to the dealership and told them to check out the keys since this happened before. Apparently the codes in the key were erased or bad and they reprogrammed them for $40 and fixed the codes on the car too.
So if anyone has a similar problem and nothing is working, check out the keys. It sounds ridiculous that the key would cause this issue. I work around a lot of EM fields and thought my key must have gotten erased. I went home and picked up the second set of keys and that didn't work either. I don't know if the codes on the spare key were bad too, but apparently the security system locks out the keys if too many unsuccessful start attempts are made (according to the dealership, is this true? I did not pull out and re-insert the key into the ignition thingy many times). They reprogrammed the keys and set the car and I was off.
The first time this happened, I towed it to a mechanic gave me a laundry list of things that needed to be replaced in order to fix the problem. $$$$. I told him to stop whatever he was doing and had it re-towed to Nissan, after $180 of labour, +$200 in towing and a few hours of the mechanic banging his head, he figured out it was the key codes. The key was opening the trunk/doors fine but not allowing a start.
