ABS sensor is stuck. Help?

My passenger side ABS sensor is stuck in the steering knuckle. How do I get this thing out? I have removed the bolt holding it in and this thing wont budge. My drivers side came right out.

Also it appears there is a little slit to but a flathead screwdriver on it to tap it loose. Tried that, and just whaled on it with a hammer and nothing.

I then tried tapping it out from the wheel hub side after removing my CV axle, nothing happened. The screw driver sunk into the plastic a bit. So who knows...I may have destroyed the sensor already but I am not sure.

Anyone else have any tips? I think this damn thing is just rusted right in.

If worse comes to worse and I have to smash it out with a sledge, how expensive are these and how do I go about replacing it? It looks like one continuous wire without a connector.....

Thanks guys

Oh my god this is so flipping irritating. I managed to pound a screwdriver inbetween the metal plate and the steering knuckle. I tried prying it, but I broke the tips off of 3 screwdrivers already.

I said **** it and put a socket extender on the ABS sensor and started smashing it, the damn thing still wont budge!! OMFG. I am gonna try smashing it out with a sledge hammer now and if that doesn't do it I don't know what the **** I will do. I will probably have the drill the ****ing sensor.

****!!!

It's impossible to get the front's out without breaking them. You will have to buy a new one from the dealer. Why are you trying to remove it?

Well, finally got it out. My drivers side was no problem at all. The passengers side took 12 HEAVY hits with a 10lb sledge hammer. That thing was in there good.

PS I removed it because I had to get the steering knuckle off to do my bearings.

You should have just removed the knuckle with it still attached then. You're probably going to have an ABS light on.

You can simply unplug it from within the engine compartment. Pop out the rubber gromet, slide the connector through the inner fender and remove the hub with the sensor in it, undamaged. That would have taken you less then 2 minutes and cost you $0.00.

QFT...they don't need to be removed unless they are bad and are being replaced. The passenger side is prob destroyed too, they are $170-190 at the dealership, and that is the only place to get one.

Good luck and hopefully they are still both working.

Too late now I guess..... The drivers side should work fine. The passengers side, I haven't tested it yet, but I would be surprised if it still works because I pretty much flattened the sensor element.

Oh well, I guess my car no longer has ABS.....

Made the same mistake, after I toasted my D/S sensor, I woke up and realized, sh*t, I'm a dumbass, all I had to do was disconnect this simple connector and I'm set.

Yup, no ABS for me anymore either. They want $246 for one here in Can.

95/96 sensors will work. 97-99 won't.

A32s made in July of '96 are MY1997.

PM Maxima_Joe, see if he has any.

Actually you're right, the front sensors don't really matter. The rears, however, have protruding poles and have different shapes depending on year.

Wow, I love how some of my threads from ages ago get resurrected.

Anyway, I still haven't gotten a replacement yet. One thing I was wondering, will a front sensor from a 5th gen work? It seems front ABS sensors out of 5th gens are easily salvageable when people part out 5th's but most 4th gen sensors are seized into place.

It would be great if a 5th gen sensor works cause I see a lot more of them.

Spray some PB Blaster on there before you do. May help to loosen it up.

If your abs light is on could that stop your cruise control from working? OR are they completely unrelated? I noticed my cruise stopped working shortly after my abs light came on...

Anyone has a writeup on how to clean or test or replace the ABS sensor?

Where are the all the ABS sensor locate?

Seems like very hard to remove and repair. I have the ABS light ON and i want to fix it.

thanks

There is a procedure located in the FSM that tells you how to pull the codes for the ABS light (just like the check engine light or airbag light) but I can't recall off the top of my head what exactly it is.

Once you figure out which wheel is having issues, check the fuses first to see if that could be your problem, then check the sensor on that wheel. Chances are more than not its the wheel sensor, which can be a royal PITA to get out.

Hope this helps.

Matt
