VSS OD Blinking Problem

Hi guys,

My OD is blinking intermittently, so I checked the TCM codes and it points to the VSS.

Now, I had an intermittent CEL for this, and I replaced the sensor in case it was the problem....it wasn't I guess. My CEL is gone, but it comes back every once in a blue moon.

I read through this thread: Vehicle Speed Sensor

And saw that he had the dealer replace the speedo or something...it isn't real clear on what was actually replaced.

So my question is: If I replaced the gauge cluster, would it solve my issue?

simple enough for me to answer

pretty sure it won't fix the issue becasue there's no feedback from the cluster on anything.

Wait it seems it was the "speedo head" whatever that is.

Can someone point me in the right direction as to where that is in the FSM?

Is it hard to replace?

Is it in the cluster or the Transmission?

This thread SPEEDO HEAD doesn't really clear things up, but it's the only thing i could find.

EL 81 is a how to test the vss and going back from that is all about the cluster - but mostly wiring. idk what the head is - maybe the cluster itself? - no term like that in the fsm.

If youve checked the vss (the one in the tranny) and its good, its very likely that you need a new speedometer. You can try tightening the bolts that secure it to the cluster, which has worked for some people, but not me, it kept coming back a week or two later till I changed the speedo.

I will probably change it out when I find a good price one a cluster.

One question though, will the dealer be able to roll the mileage back to what mine is? Do they have to do any more calibrating when I put a new cluster in?

There are places that can do it, here its illegal unless you tell the government you are doing it because the one you have now is faulty, I guess it depends on the laws in your area. You dont need to buy a whole cluster, you can just buy the speedometer from someone here, e-bay, or the junk yard. Dont buy it from the dealer, you can also install it yourself, its pretty easy.

bro to be very honest with u i had the same prob once and the CEL threw crazy codes and sent me in 10 differnet directions wasting money here and there and finally after wasting money i went to the dealership and found out that the TCM-tranny computer was shot and went to junkyard got the part $120 and worked like new. but in any case start with that and c if solves ur problem good luck
