exhaust manifold

So I have all my hardware and gaskets for my ypipe install. Yesterday I lifted the car and sprayed PB blaster several times over two hours on the manifold to Y bolts. They would not break loose by hand without using enough tq that I felt they will snap. I have impact tools, but again, I think they will just snap or strip. The threads on the studs are NOT in good shape. I understand NORMALLY this is not a problem, but on my car it is. I went through hell with an oxy-ace torch doing the lower parts (cat) of the exhaust but I cant do that up by the Y.

My question is, if I snap them, can the manifold-Y studs be pushed out. I searched and found some answers that seemed to say they cant be tapped out, but I feel no welds on the back of flange, and read no definite answeres. I would like to just snap them all on purpose and replace studs with fresh bolts IF possible. Are they threaded, welded, or just regular metric bolts?

thx

They're studs, and they should be threaded into the manifold. However, if you think the nuts aren't going to come off easily, how do you expect to take the studs out in the car? They're going to be far worse than the nuts are.

Just try taking the nuts off with an impact. If the studs snap, the easiest (and likely quickest) option is to pull the manifolds off and replace the studs on the bench.

Of course, if you're doing all that, depending how much you're spending on a Y you could just get the cheapie headers from eBay, and throw them on. IMO pulling the manifolds (while not hard work, merely tedious), plus the work in replacing the studs, I would just go the headers route.

HAHAHAHA i just sold my cattman headers/Y and traded for this stillen ypipe . The problem with the manifolds is that those studs on the head rusted to a nub and will snap off. Im not going to pull the heads on this rusted pile to fix those busted studs too. I dont understand why they couldn't just use standard metric bolts on the exhaust end. I guess ease of service is not an engineering priority.

Thanks for letting me know they are threaded
