Just installed a Y-Pipe

hi there, I've just installed a Y-Pipe (an e-bay pipe) + headers and my exhaust sounds like a V8 at idle? is this normal or is there a good chance i haven't tightened something down properly?

better that than "bees in a can" sound did you use ebay gaskets? those might leak so it's better to buy new oem ones.

sounds like it should , be prepare to smell gas burning if you did the cat also. sounds very nice and you will feel a BIG difference.

and this is a bad thing as opposed to the narrow "V" and tightly timed chainsaw sound that these things can typically exhibit?

its going to sound like more beefy now cause i know once you do headers and y-pipe you eliminate the cats so you needan O2 simulator and then perhaps a little tune cause you are going to be running RICH

'Sounds like a V8' means absolutely nothing. Is it loping, as if it had a cam? Is it just plain loud? What exactly is different about it?

~ 15 hp isn't exactly what I'd call a BIG difference.

i've no idea this "cam" sound is because i've never heard a 4 stroke engine without cams before

but yes, its similar sound to a car with an aftermarket cam, except with a more consistant idle...

Anyway, i think the problem was an exhaust leak. i redid the gasket on the cat converter. and put some exhaust putty on the EGR tube. which seams to help a lot. the problem was that the exhaust was too loud, way to loud for normal driving. but now its only a little louder than stock but the tone is transformed. must say, i like the noise.

AH!, apparently i broke one of my ignition coils during the install. so I've replaced it and the car is 100% now ,feels a lot stronger, so i'm alot happier however when i step on i can still feel the exhaust pipe smacking against something in the "transmission tunnel". has anyone else had this problem with the SS autochrome ebay headers / Y - Pipe combo?

yeah, i guy i know had the same problem. maybe my fix that worked for him will help you too - go to a muffler shop and have them weld in an extra hanger. that'll stiffen it up enough to stop the banging.

he tried installing the pipe from the engine bay. I dont know how he did it, but some how he shimmied the pipe in between the rear of the engine and the firewall, tearing most of his hoses and wires including breaking his coil pack. It got stuck, and he had to take off the hood to sledge hammer it in to place.

yeah not to you turbo boy but to us NA's it is pretty nice.

Hey man make sure your O2's are in, cause with the stock resonator and muffler in you shouldnt get to much of an increase from what i've heard.
