ELM 327 compatible with free OBD tools?

There are tons of OBDII to USB interfaces on ebay, however most of them are these cheapo Hong Kong jobs:

In theory, if it really does have the ELM 327 it should be compatible and work with OBD softwares such as:

I don't know, everything sounds like it should work, but I am a bit weary. Also, these are the protocols it supports:

SAE J1850 PWM (41.6 kbaud)

I have the ELM 327, and I tried using AutoEnginuity, it doesnt work with the ELM 327 as i've learned, but ELM 327 works with scantool.net software for it though.

There are a lot of ELM knock offs, the real ones go for about 48 shipped on ebay.

I'm currently looking for the best software with full compatibility with the ELM 327 without having to shell out money for a $150 ELM 5.
