MPG on your 1995 maxima ?!?
Hello all,
Two questions, a) what's your MPG, and b) if I continously put regular unleaded would I hurt anything other than the check engine light coming on? I am not being penny wise, but the way the prices are going up every little bit helps especially if your other car is a V8 ...
thx,

Dude...
lol...
93 is 10 or 20 cents more. It's not like your fillup is going to cost $40 more. JUST BUY 93 OCTANE. It might not help your MPG, but it'll burn cleaner and leave less garbage in your engine.
Plus...in NY at least...gas has dropped from $4.30 for 93 to $3.85. IT'S CHEAP.

a) my mpg ranges between 24-31 b) the ecm will compensate if you use lower octane gas but the engine will not run optimally. it normally wont cause a SES light just for that. but as stated above you should use the manufacturer recommended octane, its worth the extra buck or two ay fill up.

I've been putting in 87 for years with no ill effects and no check engine light. I've been getting 26 mpg 90%+ highway driving for the past 6 months or so (will probably drop when the winter gas mixture is out).

using lower octane fuel can cause knocking especially at lower altitudes. It could potentially foul your o2 sensors due to excess junk in your exhaust. Most people on the org have reported better mileage after using premium. I couldn't tell you for sure though because haven't every put anything less than the manufacture recommended 91 octane

I get 42 mpg consistently in my 4th gen...
Seriously, everyone's MPG will vary depending on climate, driving conditions, mechanical condition of the car, maintenance, etc. There are 1000 threads out there just like this.

With a relatively light foot, following the speed limit and driving conservatively, I get between 26-33 mpg. The number obviously goes up as highway driving increases and goes down as city driving increases. The car is always fed a diet of 93 octane.

I get 25mpg mixed driving (half-half) using 93. My car, since November of 2006 when I got it and started re-doing all the maintenance, has seen nothing but synthetic fluids and 93 octane gas.
My car is one of the best running cars I have ever encountered. NO ISSUES. Zero, zip, nada.

Dakid712.......YOU WIN!!!!
I get about 26mpg on the highway in my stock '97SE 5-spd w/ K&N air filter. Here in CO our available octane numbers are 2-points lower than you guys closer to sea level (I'm at 5000'). The low end is 85, I tend to mix the 89 mid-grade and 91 upper grade that we have. Seems to work well.

i dont get very good mileage...... im a freaking lead foot. i like to push the maxima to the max everytime i drive
btw, the little note from the manufacturer on the inside of the gas door says "premium fuel recommended for maximum performance." recommended... hmm now why would the manufacturer take the time to recommend us to fill up with premium? probably for MAXimum performance from our MAXima. they meant to say USE ONLY PREMIUM. fill up with premium.

I have a 96 GXE with 254,000 miles on it and i get about 430 miles per tank. I drive about 110 miles each day round trip to work and home. I will not get rid of my car because it gets great mileage and it still runs great with little headaches.

I've been driving my Max for four years with on regular octane with no engine side effects or pinging. My brother had a Maxima that he drove on regular for 300,000 miles with no side effects.
If you want to be on the safe side re: reducing any potential knock, get a repair manual and an ohm-meter and make sure you Throttle Position Sensor is set to the right resistance. (This was easy on my car, I just needed an ohm-meter and a screw-driver, took me 10 minutes.) My TPS was set a little high, which I believe sets your engine base timing which advances from there with your RPM. Once I set it to factory specs, my car ran smoother and my gas mileage improved.
