blinking cruise control light

blinking cruise control light
In all the years I have been driving this car I have never seen it do what it did last night. Headed down the highway at 55mph on cruise (I'm a believer in the use of CC), the car suddenly slowed down and the "CRUISE" light on the dash started blinking rapidly. The buttons didn't work. I turned the cruise control OFF, turned it back ON, engaged it, and all was fine and it didn't act up the rest of the trip. My CEL did not come on ( I know of two codes that I have currently which are the knock sensor and vehicle speed sensor codes).
I thought the VSS may have been the culprit, but I've had that code for well over a year now and the cruise control has ALWAYS worked.
What could have caused the car to suddenly lose the CC and the light to blink rapidly?

When I got the VSS code it didn't stay gone for long after I replaced the VSS and reset the computer. Researching the form showed that the VSS code can also be a problem in the speedo circuit loose screws on the back of the instrument panel or a bad speedo. Mine was a bad speedo. If I remember right, problems related the that code could cause problems with the cruise control.

It sounds like the VSS might have lost signal for a second. The CC will also do that if you hit a patch of ice, get air, or hydroplane. It the VSS signal jumps/drops too quickly the CC will turn off and the light will flash.

I have the same problem. I dont even use my cc any more. Your VSS code is the cause. Like the guy who posted b4 me said the signal comes and goes. Its either ur VSS, speedo, or loose screws behind ur cluster (speedo). In my case, i've changed my VSS, & tighten up the screws, and no change in mil going away. Determined that i have a bad speedo. Going to change the whole cluster, cuz i learn that the longer u wait to change the cluster, eventually other parts of it begin 2 fail as well Think about it, its a circuit board behind there, one part fails, soon it will all fail. My gas gauge stop working once. It works now, who knows wen it will fail again. The gas light stopped working permanently over a yr ago.
