Speedo Problem

Alright, so I've had this problem sporadically thoughout the years, but now it's just gotten too bad. My speedo used to drop down every once in a while for a split second when I let off the gas. No big deal. Then it started doing it when I hit big bumps in the road. Still no big deal unless I was on the highway with the CC set. Now, the speedo will only work if I give it 1/2 throttle or more. Other then that it just sits at 0. Things that I've replaced recently: Transmission, Speedo sensor (from dealership), speedo sensor wiring harness, complete gauge cluster with only 21k miles from a '97. No matter what I changed it does the exact same thing. Please help this OG out!

sounds to me like you need to start chasing wires chances are the ones going to the cluster are having issues based on your description

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Oh well, at least I got SE gauges in the process.

you have a lose connection somewhere i would think maybe in the cluster or at the VSS

Yeah, I just replaced my wiring harness on the VSS, and it didn't fix it. I think I'm going to just run two new wires all the way to the cluster. It looks like I can screw them into the cluster with the screws that hold the guage in place, since that is what the cluster uses to transmit the voltage to the actual guage.

Try tightening the screws on the back of the cluster. That's supposed to work sometimes...

I had to replace my cluster twice. The first one (from ebay) had the same problem. But the second one (from an org'er) has been fine.

I tightened them all. The new cluster only has 21k miles on it. I'm going ghetto run some wires though the door jamb to see if that fixes the problem. I'll update this thread when I figure it out.

I ended up running new wires from the VSS directly to the back of the speedo. Works flawlessly now.
