Sorry to ask such a rookie question, but I don't know much about the inner workings of the car... My car was broken into and I believe the thief broke the player. The car doesn't have the stock Bose system, but a Sony Xplod XR-CA600X system which has a tape deck in dash and manages a cd changer mounted in the trunk. I've tried buying two replacement faceplates off Ebay to see if it still works, but unfortunately it looks like the problem is more serious because the display doesn't light up when I pop it in.
I have a couple questions:
1) Am I limited to looking for another system that's a "cd receiver" type in order for it to work with my changer in the trunk?
2) I know older cars have special wiring needs for aftermarket car stereos. I'm assuming that since I have an aftermarket radio, I have some sort of special wiring. How system specific is this wiring? Is it specific to the CA600X or to all Sony systems or to any aftermarket audio system? I ask because I'd like to know if I can purchase something other than a Sony. They don't make the CA600 anymore.
3) The thief cut the plastic center console to try to steal the system and the plastic is now broken. Do the car audio places usually have plastic pieces to replace the old one?
4) Does anyone know of any "value" systems out there with decent sound and pretty inexpensive? I don't know much about car audio. I know that whoever had the car before me installed 200W Xplod speakers, no amps or subs (the speakres are really not that good overall, but again, not looking to upgrade those since I don't have much $$$). Just an idea of what I have, so if anyone weighs in, you know what I'm currently listening to.
I know this is a pretty long post, so thanks for reading and any help would really be appreciated.
id say go with a basic pioneer, should run you about $115 at walmart. the adapter if you have one, is specific to the car but not to the radio so you would just match your new radio's wire to the ones from the adapter plug. u might not even have one since you dont have a bose system in there. the cables might be spliced together with no adapter.

take a pic so we can see what is broken. there are plenty of "plastic pieces"
You can get any radio you want. I would avoid the cheap radios at walmart, but pioneer does sell a very ncie double din radio (I'll link it when the pioneer site comes back up). You could also get one of those newer factory radios going around.

Ouch, sorry for the loss. As in another radio/CD player, it SHOULD hook up(especially since you already have an aftermarket one). If you are not sure it will there's wiring diagrams to show you how to hook it up. As for the plastic pieces, I'm guessing this fool tried to cut your factory trim to try and get it out(Which Im assuming, he didnt since you only need the faceplate). If u need a factory "plastic" piece, go to the for sale forums, you can find one there for sure(and cheap, do NOT go to dealer for these pieces!). Pics would be nice also, to further help you along the way.
I guess there's a little comfort in that...$115 bucks is a little more than I can afford at this point, especially since I'll have to take it someplace to get the thing installed. Would the Pioneer system still work with my Sony CD changer do you think? Anyone else have thoughts? There's a couple links with pics below...
install the radio yourself and save money (you can get instructions here)
that front face plate is dead simple to replace and you can prob get one for $10-15 here.
All in all you would be looking at $15 for the radio trim, and about 1-2 hours to install the new radio. plus the cost of whatever radio you choose of course. (prob only take you 30 min to install)

Order from crutchfield.com. They have install instructions and send everything you need for the install. Normally they are really good about pricing too. That's where my family and I get all of our stuff.
if a certain org member will get back to me on some interior parts i could sell you that piece that the guy broke... im getting silver dash trim once the guy messages me... and ill take out my black stuff... sorry about the thief man... some people
I'm pretty sure it's not the wiring because I can get the tape deck to work by resetting the receiver and having the faceplate touching the contacts. Unfortunately, the display doesn't work at all and I can't switch between tape/radio/cd player.
i hate to play Mod, but yaknow theres an entire Audio Specific forum for this kind of thing. As for the problem you have, just buy a new deck; i know that your strapped for cash, which is why i would either use Ebay or go through a friend. you wouldnt believe the amount of audio equipment lieing in your friends and familys garages if you just looked. Thats how i came across my Blaupunkt HU with low level outputs and it works great.
on the subject of the wireing. its really quite easy, navigate to the Audio forum and use the Search function and im sure youll find the wire coloring codes your looking for. if not im sure i can help you out.
