Hard start help please
hey guys,
i have had a hard starting problem for two weeks now. i have searched and read thru the threads on hard starting. i have cleaned my IAVC and TB and changed the gaskets, replaced the igniton switch, changed the starter and also checked the ground engine( ground that the negative battery terminal connect to).
any other ideaas on what i can do? i am stumped and afraid i wont be able to start the car one day. it takes about 4 seconds of cranking before it turns over and sometimes it would start right up. any help would be appreciated,and thanks in advance.
im going to try the ground wire to the tranny and starter this weekend,i hope it helps.

EVAP purge valve tends to cause those symptoms as well, but a telltale sign of that would be that it sometimes immediatly stalls right after starting, and will usually throw a code. ECTS is another one, just trying to recommend some of the things that are a little less suspected, I would ground the hell out of that starter/bellhousng first.

OK, maybe unrelated, but I also have some "slight" problems starting the car. When it has been sitting for few hours, it would crank just a few more times than I am used to, before it starts. It still starts every time and runs without any problems. When it's hot it starts right up also. Just the cold start is a bit weird. It's almost like the fuel drains back to the tank a bit and needs a few more cranks to get back up... Ideas?

You could try these simple steps assuming that no MIL is shown. Also I assume that the engine compression is OK (i.e. not an oil burner or smoker).

- Check the battery by using another to jump start the car. If the battery is weak it will not provide enough current for all the systems to function while the starter is operating. If this solves the problem replace the battery and check charging system. Next step -
- Check the fuel pressure when the engine has been stopped for some time. Easy way to do this is to switch on the ignition, then wait for about 5 seconds, switch it off then repeat this a few times (say 5), then start the engine. You should also be able to here the fuel pump coming on for a about a couple of seconds. Also once the engine has started switch off and Immediately crank again. If it starts without a problem you may have a leaky fuel line or an issue with the fuel pump or fuel pump relay. Next step -
- Crank the engine while the throttle is pressed 1/3 way in. If this solves the problem please check the throttle opener unit and wiring. This supplies extra air for starting. Next step -
- Put the transmission in Neutral (assuming that this is an auto gearbox) and move the gear lever a little and start it. If this solves the issue you may have to adjust the linkage and check and replace the Park/Neutral position switch. Next step -
- If none of these solves the problem the Crank position sensor and other related sensor malfunctions could cause the problem. However these should show a MIL. So check if the MIL lamp is working.

thanks everyone for your replies. i did the extra ground from the starter only and it has helped! starts right up now!im gonna try to add another ground for the tranny also just to be on the safe side. but its probably just from corrossion over time on the starter and when i removed the starter and put it back, the contact became better.

I have a similar problem with my 1995 she starts up great after warm but if it sits around a while it doesnt like to start up on the first try... takes about 4-5 trys the more I crank the more closer I get to it rolling over.. when I first got the car you would have to give it gas to start it.. and thats just wrong for a fuel injected car... the battery is good.. and ive tried the fuel pressure test didnt seem to work.. I might get some T.B spray and spit some of that into it. It might be a sensor, the wonderful check engine light is on
