For you people, I am doing 2 pipes, 2 mufflers, on one side. I need to know, is there enough room to fit side by side 2.5" piping in the highlighted area?

I tried I couldn't get an accurate measurement due to the shape of the channel, it would help with a lift and the exhaust off...just wondering if anyone else has tried.

i'll have my exhaust off in the near future, within the next few weeks maybe sooner and I can get a measurement. but that first bend pretty much is for ONE PIPE. The only way I see that working is if you had one sitting slightly lower or something and you better have those pipes welded together or they'll be rattling like crazy.

Alright, while checking out Burns products, I came across 304 Steel piping and 16G aluminum piping. Can I do aluminum? Will it handle the heat, gases and wear? Aluminum was 0.58 lbs/ft vs the 1.59 lbs/ft of the steel, and the steel was MORE expensive by $6 / ft. Suggestions?

judging by post #41 im assuming you want to keep both tailpipes on the same side of the rear? you dont like the dual tailpipe look?

Are you boosting? I wouldn't worry about fitting two 2.5" pipes next to each other. Those could/should be 2" at max.

Justlookin, this setup is going to cost less than catman headers, Y, and catback...or right at it.

Chillin, I have no idea yet. It will be somewhere in Orlando, Ill be moving there in the fall semester.

MaximaSpd85, Single side, yes, I dont want to have to cut my bumper, and I want the 'stock' look, and Im not a big fan of the duals on a max.

Freeway, I will be later this year, yes.


Anyone wanna fill me in if aluminum will work for piping?

I want to say that welding aluminum is different but someone can chime in.

I know my y-pipe is "aluminized" steel from Warpspeed and that has been fine for 3 years.

I've heard welding aluminum is pretty tricky as well, no personal experience though.
Ill look for the thread in all motor..I'm interested in this. 2 inch piping per bank sounds reasonable. Since 3 inches was beneficial to 6. That's half an inch per cylinder with my ricer math.

hahaha, math math, not my favorite subject, hate it actually, but I always seem to pass with ease.

Anyhow, I am still debating on 2 or 2.5", I think 2.5 will be better when boosted, and the costs wont be too much more, Ill have to see.

I just wish someone came out with an equal length Y. I'm mulling over my exhaust setup as well, debating going custom or suffering with the Pontiac Grand Prix exhaust note...

It really isnt going to matter if you just have one rear o2. The rear one doesnt really do much other than monitor emissions. But If I was going to do this I would just do dual 2" pipes. I mean if all the boosted guys are only running 3" piping than 4" of total piping will be plenty...

I just want to get this straight. You are getting custom headers-piping to x pipe and than both into a single muffler?

Nah, 2 separate mufflers, 6" round, 21" long. Side by side in the stock location.

I made some changes to the plan, now going steel. Would like iconel or titanium but to expensive.

So matt blehm helped me out some and made the suggestion that I use a Y pipe on either end of a 3" resonator to make my X pipe. Does this sound like a good idea? Heres the idea:

I think that will work. That is basically what the G35/350z has



That might actually be the way to go, easy to make too

Looks like to get that 350 sound you just need a short even run to the merge. I think the way to get that sound is all in the y-pipe

I am thinking about making the two pipes equal length before the Y/res/Y, better sound, maybe performance, etc...and peace of mind that I did it to the best of my ability.

Oh, and I found a mandrel bender in Orlando, Performance Muffler Man on East Colonial Drive. Time to work some friendly magic and convince them to let me under the lift...

waiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit a second. so the 350z exhaust isnt actually DUAL. that was the argument though, that the 350z came stock with larger exhaust diameter per bank than we are doing aftermarket. That isnt dual at all...it merges into one and has some phony dual tip muffler.

I like matt's idea there MOHF. I dont know how an xpipe works exactly so i'm not sure if thats the same when you separate it with the resonator like that. but its all about how it fits under the car really.

also, what headers are you using that have a 2.5 outlet? or are you cutting some up to achieve that?

It all depends on what the in/out of the resonator are on the 350Z/G. Look at it this way, the cross sectional area for 2.5" and 3" are the following:

2 ( pi * 2.5^2) = 39.25 for dual 2.5" piping
(pi * 3^2) = 26.26 for single 3" piping
(pi * 3.5^1) = 38.46 for single 3.5" piping.

Since I will have 39 sq in with the dual 2.5" piping, I should probably go with a 3.5" Y/Resonator/Y, correct? Trying to keep the same velocity in exhaust gases.

I will probably be modifying a set of OBX headers, which would include getting the 2.5" outlet.

The way this sets up it would still be considered true dual, as basically I am taking an X pipe, cutting it in half and sticking a resonator in there.

Here is my take on dual exhaust for the maxima:

Some disadvantages of a dual exhaust are: Weight, cost, noise--afterall, you are putting on an aftermarket muffler, it will most likely drone.

Now, my suggestion to get the best of both worlds is to do an exhaust cut out. Right behind the Y-pipe, put in a cut out, that pipes back to the stock location.

This way you can have one exhaust track for WOT that makes great power, sounds mean and you can pipe it all the way to the back of the car.

When you want to cruise around town you can use the "stock" exhaust track. Put on a muffler that won't drone and you have the best of all worlds.

You will also cut down on the weight, because you are not adding 2 resonators, 2 mufflers, etc. It also saves some cost.

Yes, it's loud. lol. Hence the bandclamp. I have an old lexus GS400 muffler I put a 3" adaptor on that I can switch out in about 10 minutes for long trips and such.

Not a resonator so to speak, that is a 12" Dynomax race muffler at the tail section, there's an 18" version in the tunnel section and a 3" converter as well.

Ah, just trying to figure out why everyone acts like 3" is louder. I'd still be running the regular resonator and muffler on mine.

It's not that it's 3" that makes it loud,,,its just that those mufflers are barely anything, I tried alot of mufflers to try to get it as quiet as possible, without restriction. This is by far the loudest, however, they're true straight thru, so I deal with the noise and just slap on the quieter muffler for road trips and such.

gotcha. in that case i'll just put the resonator and muffler on there like I planned. I'm not worried about the restriction of either of those. I'm not going to do the dual tips, unless they are both on the same side of the car like MOHF is saying.
