I was driving to work with the cruise on at 55pmh. Didn,t think it was cold enough for ice on the road but I was wrong. Rear end kicked out and I tapped the clutch to kill the cruise. car whipped back a couple of times and I touched the guard rail at 90 degrees, sliding parallel with the rail. Only contact was the front bumper and hood lip to the guard rail. I got off Lucky. Bent the lip of the hood, broke the turn signal, broke the grill trim, broke the headlight adjuster anchor, and made the bumper worse than it was.

Damn, Ive almost lost it like that on snow/ice before too. Cruising in a snow storm behind another car that was plowing through the snow and we both hit ice and almost skid into the guard rail. Luckily I taped the brakes quickly, and then hit the gas and it grabbed traction and pulled me away.

Fun stuff driving in the winter!

Looks like most of your stuff will buff out. 50 bucks could get you a new light and grill from a junk yard. Sand and paint the bumper if it isnt cracked?

when I am sliding that bad I keep my thumb on the ebrake and pull up and let the car fishtail a little to get a little bit better total car control. It sounds crazy but if your sliding I have found that locking up your rear tires and skill on the steering wheel can really make a difference..

When you hit a patch of ice and have only a fraction of a second to react, there isn't any time for fancy tricks like this. Besides, once you hit ice and slide, you're going for a ride.

There a 96 in the wrecking yard in town here, if the bumper is any good. Its the wrong color, but I'm thinking about painting it black anyways. I washed the mud off and its scarred deep with LARGE black streaks across it.

BS. locking up your tires gives you zero traction and makes it worse. On ice, the best you can do is let up on the brakes and do your best with the steering.

I should have nailed 3rd and gunned it to power out, but I just wanted to slow down and limit the damage.

on a serious note though, I spun out on icy roads on a highway once. Didn't damage anything but do not want to do that again.

Two different brands from the wrecking yard. Toyo 800 Ultra front, and Goodyear Viva 2 rear 205/65 15. They're like 75 percent still.

Ice does really suck. Snow is easy to recover from if you start to slide. If its a slow enough slide, whoever mentioned tapping the ebrake was sorta right, itll let you control the slide while powering out.

Ice though, it just sucks. Youre in for the ride hah.

Here is the cleaned up pic. The turn signal is glued back together and reinstalled. The license plate screws dug in at the top, and there is a deep gouge below the turn signal. The crease at the right (your left) is old, but substantial. Thee hood is creased above the right side of the grill, I'll hit it with the heat gun and bend it back up a bit.

yeah looks to be mostly cosmetic aside from the adjustment bracket on the light and side marker. That is scary stuff. All those northern Max's in the snow and ice... man I just have to make sure I have my AC ready for summer down here. Its required. Great to hear no injury to yourself though or anyone else.

Went to the wrecking yard and got a headlight and j hooks for the battery. $25.00.
The bumper there was trashed tho. Sitting next to it was a 93 Q45 with two piston calipers. Are the Q45 discs any bigger?

Sh*t i did that to my old car when it was raining, i t-bone the guard rail on an of ramp and bent the chasis all the way back to the driver seat. Its a good thing it was only cosmetic. good to hear you didnt get hurt though.

I had a spinout in my 93 sedan civic on my way to mn a cpl of yrs back and ended up pulling a 720 on i35 just north of des Moines I slid out and went to correct it and I guess I overcorrected and just bc I knew a little known trick I was able to pull out of it and ended up on the shoulder. Just remember that while spinning if you turn into your spin turns faster and if you turn outward then it slows the spin, ultimate goal being going forward

you can get a painted brand new bumper cover for like $250 from dnhautoparts, I replaced the rear bumper on my old 95 ruby pearl and the paint match was very very good.
