Do you think that you would be better off getting an auto or a manual? Because Im in the process of buying a car to get the swap. What should I look for. Currently I'm looking for semi-high miles, loaded, and cheap. But what about auto or man. I dont know which would be better. Would the VQ35 blow a VQ30 auto tranny or would it be fine?

it bolt up to an automatic also, but you'll want to do some upgrades to it to put up with the new power increase.

Congrats Romeo06, keep up the work and pay attention to detail, it can save you a lot of time. when the thread first loaded I was hoping it was for the ZX, but then I saw the max it was going into.

is this the motor that was up for sale a little while ago? looks like it.

That's funny, I saw the first few pics and said, hey that's toddemullin's motor. He and I were IM'ing a lot during our swaps. His setup is a lot nicer than mine. I am glad to see it went to a good home.

Unless you have a plan already, you will have to fab up a bracket for the throttle cable linkage. Not the one that's already on the converted throttle body, but the actual cable with the two jam nuts on it. Just dont mount it to the firewall.

looks good so far. Keep the updates coming.

lol no i wouldnt want to put a vq35 in my Z's, they are both TT's , yes this is the motor that was up for sale a little while ago, its clean as ever so my friend snatched it up and thats actually his maxima were putting it in. From doing a million swaps on Z's i can truly say that pulling the motor on a max was a little more difficult. I think its because we left the tranny on , there was little space for it to wedge out in. Anyways i will keep taking more pictures and keep updating your guys on this process as im in no hurry to get it done. And ill probably have some questions on what to keep and what not to swap over from the vq30 !

My friend picked it up from him about a month ago and we just started pulling stuff apart sunday so hopefully everything goes smoothly and he can finally *try* to keep up with my Z finally (its his goal) , lol im just kidding, but i cant wait to get this on the road !

really?? as tight of a fit as it is in the ZX i figured the VQ would have been gravy.

I did it tranny then motor the first time, but all motor and tranny the 2nd time and it was easier the second.

if you have any questions feel free to pm me.

depends on how you shop, and what you can buy/get at a discount. average is about $2k

depends on the driver, how they launch, the year of the car, weight, tires, tune.

n/a average high 13's (still a ballpark)

you can look thru the time slips and see what some of the 3.5 are running.

hahah you would think so but not at all, i could of pulled out 3 ZX motors out in the same amount of time i did the maxima. On the Z there are 2 motor mounts which are cake to get to, then 6 bolts for the tranny bracket and 4 nuts to take off the drive shaft and your set. Pull both motor/trans at once. Of course you have to disconnect all little stuff efi harness, ps, radiator, intake piping ext... but all in all it looks like a tight fit because there are so many pointless coolant lines and egr lines that your can bypass and re-run / eliminate, and that gets rid of soo much mess in the engine bay

Question: Do you have to swap over all this stuff thats on the vq30 over to the vq35? The EGR and this entire mess right here....

and another thing, on the vq35 there is a oil cooler that the oil filter screws onto, where do you run each line to?

I have an 02 altima motor, and I threw all that crap away. SO MUCH ROOM IN THERE NOW! The vacuum lines you will have to figure those out after you put the motor in.

ok so throw all that crap away... what did you use to plug up the hard line that runs from the side of the rear header to the egr?

a very large bolt.
welded shut.
take the original bolt that fits into there (cut the pipe to get it off), and either weld the top, or drop a bolt in and fill with JB weld.

you can get creative just as long as its closed off and will hold.

Im not sure what its like on the 3.5 but with the 3.0 a penny fits very nicely in the original screw sleeve. You really have to hammer and warp the penny, but it wont come out. We actually pushed it in further, and put some liquid gasket inside and out.

Nice swap, BTW, good luck!!!

That's because you're PULLING them! I could DROP 3 VQ motors quicker than I could put down pipes on a TT

Anyways looking good, that is a sweet *** motor, good to see it's finally going in something. Soon enough you'll be able to add yourself to the swap thread in AM...........................

You might want to suggest that your buddy shell out the $120 for a 5th gen oem exedy clutch.............

haha yeah you have me on that one, downpipes are no fun , yeah a 5th gen clutch of a after market stage 2 exedy would be alot better, but he's barely bought that motor, he pulled money out of who knows where to buy it, and on top of that he bought a new engine harness also, and there were people on here that actually have that XTD stage 3 clutch in their cars now and they said they have no complaints about it, who knows, we'll see i guess

the port on the right of the oil cooler, that gets a coolant line that will run to the 3.5 thermostat, it will have an extra nipple.

the other port is to connect to the rear of the block, the line should already be there on the 3.5 unless it was uninstalled.

also, what have you heard about that XTD clutch? why did you choose that clutch?

My friend (adriena) hes a member on here, he bought that clutch because he's really pressed for money right now and it was pretty cheap on ebay. He asked around on here and there were a couple guys using the clutch and they had no complaints about it. Also he's more focused on school than the swap even tho every penny he has had went to this motor !
