Starting Problem
Hey guys my friend has a 99' and it wont start. All it does is crank crank crank and nothing else. I ran the ecu and i had 2 codes pop up. Both codes were P0335 which is the crankshaft position sensor. I replaced BOTH the front and the side sensor and still all it does is crank but wont fire up. No other codes pop up so what else can it be? Thanks

Do you have spark? fuel? How's the timing? Compression?
Has it ever started before? Any recent work done to it that might cause this?
Need some more info...

the car was running fine. The maf went out and i didnt have another maxima maf handy however i did have a z32 maf laying around so i put that in and the car has recently had a rough time starting. Well i jumped it and it started and then after about 10 minutes of driving i turned it off, and it never started again. I ran the ecu and i pulled up 2 codes for 0335 which was for crank position sensor, i replaced the one on the tranny bell housing, and it still didnt start, i checked for codes again and i was still getting the same codes. So i replaced the second crank position sensor and still nothing. Can it be the harness? Starter?

yes everything is fine just changed spark plugs, it does have gas, the timing and compression is fine. it was running one day and the next it wouldn't start. I ran the codes and got one for p0335 crankshaft position sensor circuit malfunction. Changed both front and side crank sensors and still nothing. Any ideas? Could it be the starter? it still cranks but will not turn over.

If the starter is cranking it should be fine. But, I understand it is easy to remove, you can remove it and get it tested. Also make sure starter connection to frame ground is good I understand many people have problems with this.

You say it doesn't run, and it ran before. Obviously, something is causing it not to run now. It's either spark, timing, compression, or fuel.
Fuel: You say it has fuel and that you checked the pressure, how exactly did you check?
Timing/Compression: You say these are fine, but have you checked them?
Spark: You haven't checked this, yet it's one of the FOUR things that will cause a no-start condition. You probably don't have spark, but we won't really know until you check...
Basically, we need all of the above information to do any sort of diagnosis. If you're not up to or capable of doing the above, then you'll have to see a mechanic, there's only so much we can diagnose over the net.

Hi,I also have problems with starting the car. I swapped a repaired engine, and manual transmission. How can I check timing and valve timing,as my guess is that something might be done wrong,as the car starts, revs up to 300rpm and then dies, and it sounds like its choking. No codes from ecu,but the CEL light is blinking.

Would a z32 maf have anything to do with the car not starting? My maf went out and i didnt have another maxima one handy but i did have a z32 maf laying around so i put that in. Im not boosted or anything but shouldnt it still start with a z32 maf?

pulled the plugs and they wet soaked with fuel so it has fuel, it does NOT have spark however, how would you go about checking for timing? But i think spark is my problem, so does anyone have a clue as to what it can be? Thanks

COMPONENT INSPECTION
Crankshaft position sensor (POS)
1. Disconnect crankshaft position sensor (POS) harness connector.
2. Loosen the fixing bolt of the sensor.
3. Remove the sensor.
4. Visually check the sensor for chipping.
5. Reconnect crankshaft position sensor (POS) harness connector.
6. Turn ignition switch “ON”.
7. Check voltage between terminals 2 and 3 when bringing a
screwdriver into contact with, and quickly pulling away from the
sensor core.
Terminal Condition Voltage
Contacted Approximately 5V
Pulled away Approximately 0V
There should be a steady 5V as the screwdriver is drawn away
slowly.
If NG, replace crankshaft position sensor (POS).

hey i'm the friend with the 99 maxima and yes we have checked it all and the car does NOT have a spark. we replaces both crank sensors checked all the harness the engine grounds the ignition switch starter batery fuel pump and fuses coil packs spark plugs everything we could think of that had to do with the code p0335 crankshaft position sensor and some ignition. the only thing we came up with is that the car has NO FIRE. if anyone can give us any more suggestions it would greatly be appriciated. but if not i think i'm going to take it in to nissan because we have seriously tried every troubleshoot in the book!
