My 1996 GXE totaled this morning :( I hate you black ice
My fiance totaled the car this morning at 5 am courtesy of black ice!! Insurance adjuster is telling me it's a total loss, and I'll get between 2-3G for insurance check. I am a huge Nissan fan...I'm thinking of getting a 2001 Maxima GXE or SE.....any suggestions? Has anyone else have to fight it out with insurance to get money? (My step-mom said to ask for more money) .... I'm also trying to see if the collision center will let me take out the recently replaced alternator, tensioner, battery, and my stereo. My fiance is ok by the way....thank goodness for solid Japanese construction

How bad totalled? Buy it back after they take it, part it out (depending on condition of course) and you'll likely end up with more than you would've gotten just from them.
Of course, if you have the time, space, and ability.

No I'm the wife, he's the hubby....better he wrecked it than me, I would have been crying and been a huge mess......thanks for the advice. I'll find out about a buy-back but most of the parts were original and in need of repair, except the brand new things.....so hopefully I'll be a 5th generation owner in a few weeks! I'd take another 4th gen, it just has to be in perfecto condition with recent updates....tough to find in Boston area!

Well I'm glad to hear that everyone is alright. As far as a new one goes I'd say try to upgrade to a vq35 if your thinking about a 5th gen. So try and get a manual 2002-2003 maxima.
Also look around in the maximas for sale thread, I'm sure there are some by you.

My friend's gf had a pice of crap 95 Aurora (I sold it to her lol) and she was rear ended at about 30 mph. They said that was a total loss and gave her a check for over 3 grand with no fighting. I'm not sure if its because the guy that rear ended her like owns a dealership (he was pretty well off, crashed into her car with a pretty nice Isuzu Rodeo, went to the hospital, came back in a RX 400). Anyways, nicer Aurora's than that aren't even 2 grand at dealerships around here, so I would say she got a lot of money. You should try getting more, unless of course you think the 3 grand is a nice deal.

Get couple local newspapers, find the ads of the Max that are similar to yours. Also, go online (like craigslist.org) and search as well. If their price is higher than the insurance company offer, use those ads to support your point. Insurance companies will always try to make the most profit, so you have to fight for it.

Sorry.. To hear about this tragic loss. It's time to get some money out of the insurance and make sure it's really the cars value and there not trying to lowball people. Thank god that he is ok and the max is a good 5-star preformer. I would look into a another max thats a 5th gen or the 4th gen.
Good luck.
Good luck.

I hit black ice last Saturday afternoon on my way to Flagstaff. I was actually like 10 miles out, gr, almost there.
Slid into the grassy median (kind of a ditch). But the max was fine (good thing, cuz I woulda been more hysterical than I already was). Glad to hear you're ok, sorry 'bout your Max =(

I haven't been able to get to the collision center (lack of wheels obviously) to take pics. When I get down there I will def post it.....as for black ice, it is a New England term for ice that you can't see on the road. You catch some black ice and you have no chance of controlling your car until you are off the ice or hit something....like in my case..... as for new car I'm looking at the 2003 Max as suggested...that is one sweet vehicle! Now to get a GXE or SE lol? (I can't do leather, got big dogs that pop holes in leather)

black ice is the worst type of ice; the type of ice people cross the street not to encounter. When its real dark outside, you can't even see the black ice, it just sneaks up on you and takes your valuable car from you. I'm lucky enough to live in an area where there is no black ice, but I always hear about it on the radio and see it on the news and it is sooooo frightening. This country is going to hell; I blame black ice! BTW, have you heard of chocolate rain?
BTW, you don't hit black ice, black ice hits you. Kinda like Chuck Norris...
(I'm sorry I couldn't resist)

I lived in Boston , MA for 6 years but I never heard of black ice.
As for your new car, you may want to check out some 1995--2000 Lexus LS400s. That is a great car on a very reasonable price.

Glad I'm not the only one who's had some bad luck! We had some snow down here in Harrisburg on Wednesday. Was driving to the store and had to cut over on a side road to avoid an accident. A woman was walking up the middle of my lane directly at my car and when I swerved to avoid her I started to slide. By the time she figured out to move out of the way, I had no more room to manuever and ended up bouncing the right front wheel off the curb, slide down the bottom of the hill, across the street, and stopped in some guy's driveway...sideways! When I looked at the car, the right front wheel was toed out 15 degrees while the left front wheel was straight. I had it towed to the nearest shop that could check it out. Just got it back on Thursday evening: $447 for a new tie rod, ball joint, and steering bellows, along with a front wheel alignment. I'm going to have to get a camber kit for the right front to fully align it again - the camber is still 2 degrees positive, about 1.5 degrees too much. But at least I'm drivable again and nobody was injured or killed. I can always fix or replace a car. I can't replace human lives.
Glad to see you're OK. Good luck on the new car search!

Go to www.kbb.com and get the value of the car. Send it to your insurance company.
When my Chevy Prizm was totaled it was worth 6300. USAA(the other guy's insurance company.) tried to give me 4900 for the car. They told me that what they give me is not negotiable. I argued with them on the phone for almost an hour over the course of a few days and they ended up giving me 6000. It is negotiable regardless of what they tell you. Don't be afraid to confront them if you don't think you are getting enough.
Getting a 2001 like you said wouldn't be a bad idea. If I were you though I'd get the 2003 Maxima with a 6mt. It also has that nice 3.5 engine. The only issue if it were me though is that I like the 4th gen body style better than the 5th gen body style lol.

Damn good suggestion......................
I've got one for sale actually. 60K 2004, silver, $15.5k or $16k w/new tires & brakes (basically anything you want done to it = free labor, or wait another 10k miles)
Sorry to hear about the accident, glad everyone is alright.

"Ummm, sir, we can't give you full book value, we ran a carfax. It had odometer discrepency AND salvage on the title, and 8 years ago it had 130K"
I fought with them for DAYS, finally got them to cut me a check for full book value (private retail), for one in mint condition w/60k/
