Custom milled wheel spacers...anyone?

I have access to a mill, and I am interested in making some spacers for my rear. 10MM is what I would like to do. I would like some questions answered before I try anything however.

Has anyone ever made them, instead of buying them? If so, how did it go?

Do I need longer studs with 10MM spacers? How about 5MM? Or with any spacer?

Thanks!

Yes for 10mm, No for 5mm.

IIRC JSutter ran 7mm spacers on stock studs with no problems. IMO the most important thing is getting the centerbore correct or making it a size that can fit a hubcentric ring (maybe 72mm to use a 72-66.1 ring).

Not to plug but I have 5mm spacers in the garage....

H&R comes with longer studs even 5mm. It doesn't seem much but that's like about a full turn plus of thread. Rather be safe than sorry when it comes to car parts...

Well, my question is this, with the wheel on and the lugs tight, does the end of the stud touch the inside of the lug? If not, then 1 turn would be like nothing. As long as you torque it right. Or am I completely off base?

I'm interested. Did you mean lathe, not mill? Or is it a CNC mill/manual mill with a turntable? I think it would be safe to make them yourself, you just have to be really careful with tolerances.

Its a manual mill. I dont know much about it but my friend has a hangar with a slew of machines. It cost upwards of 3K so if that gives any idea.

I figured if I could make some for the price of the materials, why not? I would like to stay out of new studs(no $) so thats what Im here for.

edit: Ive got access to a lathe too.

I have some machine tool experience, and I think you're going to need both actually. You need to turn the centerbore, thickness, and outer diameter of the spacers, then you need to bore 5 holes, but they need to be indexed on a mill to get them in the right spot. That's a lot of work for someone who doesn't know their way around those machines. Aluminum would be the way to go, but you still need to watch tolerances.

Thanks for the info. Ive got machine experience with a lathe, grinders, etc, but not this mill. I will definitely read up on everything to make sure its plausible, not to mention actually being able to do it with what we have.

What kind of aluminum would you recommend?

Well at least 6061, but 7000 series would be a lot better. Stronger anyways.
