For real 2.5K for a repair? Need opinions

The airbag light started flashing about 2 days after this:

It was a 2MPH car to car scrape. One of my family members hit my parked car and kept on driving. And I did try the Revised Airbag Light Fix-Works everytime!! The light still flashes.

how does it need a new drivers airbag?
that in itself costs 1200 from a dealer. thats the bulk of cost.

I have no idea why it needs another one. Just recently my airbag light has been flashing while driving and they are saying that it needs a new one. My car has never been in a crash besides the above picture; and none of the airbags have ever been deployed. Im still unfamiliar with "code 22" but the stickies say that it would most likely be my side airbag on the passanger seat.

Probably a malfunctioning sensor somewhere

I would rather trade in 2500 for a 5 point harness and racing seats.

Where should I start looking? I'm sure as hell not paying 150$ for a dealership to plug in a computer and pull another useless code.

Since you already know what airbag it is (Drivers - Side Airbag) start calling junkyards to try and find another airbag module.

Okay, Well the mechanic told me that this module controlls all the airbags if I am not mis-understood. So does this mean I need to grab one out of a car that has side airbags? Or will any 4th gen one suffice.

did you try this procedure:

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=544585 (post #4). That's from the 5th gen, but maybe it's the same. Maybe the connection got jarred, it's hard to believe that from such a low impact hit anything was actually broken.

Well Im not entirely sure that the impact caused the light to go off. Because It did not flash untill a few days later.

But I will give the above idea a shot. Ill be back with the results in a bit.

If you do need a module...you'll need one from a loaded 98 or 99 Maxima (one with leather) as those are the only years that head side airbags. The cloth versions of those years don't have side airbags (I'm a 99 SE cloth).

Okay I did what merlin2375 recomended and got a blinking sequence from the airbag light such as: (long flash) (long flash) pause (quick flash) (quick flash)

What does this mean?

Last edited by itsdaveonline; 11-20-2007 at 01:19 PM. Reason: editied to correct flashing sequence

Well I'm not trying to start an argument but the airbags in my 98 maxima saved my life. So I would rather have them working in this car too. Later on I may sell the car and no airbags would put a huge price drop in the value of the car.

Okay well me using my minimal car logic pulled out the airbag fuse and turned the car on. It just stays lit, no blinking. Replaced fuse with a known working one and still same flashing. So the fuse is good. Relays seem to be okay.... I think.....

And yeah the side airbags are inside the seats. But at this point Im not even totally sure that it's the drivers airbag in the wheel. Who knows...

If I ran by autozone / checkers / pepboys do they offer a free diagnostic check with the scanning tool? Im so lost on what to do.

It's something you need repaired, but it's not an emergency. I know it's annoying but even if you go a few weeks with the airbag light on and the airbag not operable you should be OK. You may be able to fix the problem yourself with some of the help from the org, or you may find someone who will fix it for you at a reasonable price. Paying the dealer over 2K to repair it is a last resort.

If you have checked some of the posts about the airbag light on, it appears to be a connection problem under the passenger side seat. I had the same issue on and off for a couple of years, I ended up moving the wiring harness under the passenger seat around. Problem has not come back for at least two years. Maybe you are just not doing the reset procedure properly?

I had the passenger side seat problem. Fixed it by moving the seat back and forth..unhooking all the wires. Hooking them back up. Rolling the seat back again, smacking the airbag panel. Rolling seat back and forth. Reset the airbag light, never came back.

I did reseting without all the door open door close, i just pressed the nub enough times, turned key to off, turned it back to on light disappeared. Took a few tries.

you either have a impact sensor in the driver's door or a metal deformation sensor. is the metal buckled or dented even slightly from where it was hit? look for a yellow wiring harness and connector in the door. make sure that plug isn't loose either. i'd pocket a new sensor from the junkyard if the light is still on after you checked the plug and reset the system.

Hmm... That could be a good guess. The car was in a wreck before I bought it and was hit on that same door that the molding came off....

I went ahead and tried the moving the seat around / unhooking all the stuff underneath and resetting but still no luck. So now the car is at the dealer.
