Nissan Announces 2002 Maxima Pricing
July 30, 2001

Nissan North America has announced pricing on its 2002 Maxima flagship sedan, which goes on sale August 2, 2001 at more than 1100 Nissan retailers nationwide. The new Maxima features an MSRP of $25,449 for the most popular model, an SE equipped with automatic transmission -- only $200 higher than a comparable 2001 model -- despite an extensive list of exterior, interior and mechanical refinements including a new 3.5-liter/255-horsepower V-6 engine.
Other 2002 models include the Maxima GXE with automatic transmission, which starts at an MSRP of $24,699 and the luxurious GLE with automatic transmission, which starts at an MSRP of $27,099.

The 2002 Maxima delivers vastly improved performance through use of an all-new 3.5-liter V-6 engine, derived from the VQ series of engines which has been rated as one of Ward's Auto World's "10 Best Engines" for seven consecutive years. The new V-6 is rated at 255 horsepower and 246 lb-ft of torque, increases of 33 horsepower and 29 lb-ft of torque compared to the 2001 model's 3.0-liter engine. Other mechanical features new for 2002 include a close-ratio 6-speed manual, standard on SE (available Oct. 1) and enhanced 4-wheel disc brakes with larger front discs and four-wheel/channel/sensor anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and brake assist.

2002 Maxima's exterior has been enhanced with a new front grille and aggressive front fascia with large air intake, new four-bulb headlight design with High Intensity Discharge (HID) xenon headlights, standard side-sill spoilers, 16-inch (GXE) or 17-inch wheels with different designs for SE and GLE models), new UV-reducing solar glass, new rear taillights with clear lenses, revised vehicle badging with the new Nissan brand symbol and dual chrome exhaust tip finishers.

Three new exterior colors are available on 2002 Maxima - Tungsten Blue, Glacier Pearl, and Majestic Blue.

The 2002 Maxima's interior features a new, more supportive front seat design, new gated automatic transmission shifter, redesigned audio system faceplates, steering-wheel controlled multi-function trip computer, standard HVAC microfilter ventilation system with reusable, washable filter, multi position slide sunroof switch, power driver's seat with memory function and entry/exit feature (GLE, optional SE A/T) and an upgraded seven-speaker 200-watt Bose audio system with in-dash six-disc CD changer (trunk mounted w/ Navigational System), Radio Data System (RDS), and speed-sensitive volume control (GLE, optional SE).

Standard features on the base Maxima GXE has increased dramatically for 2002 -- many items that were formerly on the option list have now become standard equipment. This includes an eight-way power driver's seat with manual adjustable lumbar support, leather-wrapped gearshift ****, height-adjustable center console lid, premium six-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system with steering wheel audio controls, auto-dimming inside rearview mirror, cargo net, and HomeLink Universal Transceiver.

This move upscale will allow more market space for the significantly improved, all-new Altima to compete in.

Thanks for this good information. Information gleaned from other sources says that the GXE will be automatic only, and an SE equipped with the not-yet-available 6-speed manual transaxle will cost the same as the SE automatic. When you add in the destination charge the least expensive stick-shift Maxima will cost around $26K less whatever discount you can negotiate.

I bought Plain Jane (my '99 GXE 5-speed) new for $16,720 including destination charge. This '02 price list means that stick-shift buyers won't be getting any Maximas at bargain prices. Too bad...

Wow.....16.7k?

The lowest I ever saw the rare GXE 5-speed going for when they were discounting was 16.9k.....

I paid 17.9k for mine including destination....slushbox unfortunately.....

I would say the only discounted 5-speed GXEs would be the '01 models....those invoice at 20k, which means they could go for 18k or so with a decent rebate....

The 2002 equivalent of a plain-Jane Maxima is the new Altima. It's about the same size as the 4th-gen Max and has a lot more power (240 hp vs. 190). Unless you are beholden to the Maxima nameplate, the new Altima should be a sweet substitute!
