cigarette lighter

in my 97 maxima, i try to plug my ipod charger into the cig lighter and tried my phone charger and they will not get power from the cigarette lighter.
The weird thing is, i can get power and light up/ heatup a lighter.

No fuse is broken, pretty obvious if theres power going to the lighter, but why doesn't it work? I really want to charge my phone and ipod while im in the car, hate having to take it inside to charge. Any clues/ help?

Haha sorry. Read the PM I just sent but what I think is wrong is that you are getting power from the 12v source (wires) but the actual unit is bad. I cant tell you why the lighter still works but it sounds like the unit is bad.

Just a guess here, but if the chargers work in other autos, try cleaning the lighter socket. You may not be getting a good enough contact for the chargers. try a brass wire brush, then vac out the debris.

Those things are really easy to change and cheap too, so I'd go with that... you might also want to check and see what the cig lighter is wired into. In my Max somebody replaced the original cig lighter socket with one that doesn't even fit right...so if the previous owner of your max did the same thing, they may have wired it into a power source that's tuned down from 12V. Thus, your cig lighter might work but your phone/iPod might not be getting enough power to charge.

update: i fixed it, i cleaned it out with alcohol and paper towels and deep finger/nail scrubbing. It was the rust and corrosion/ w.e. that was cause from the lighter. WOOH HOO! i can use my ipod charger and phone charger now.
