Hesitation

Problem: Revs hard to 3K then from 3-4K it feels like it falls on its face then pulls hard again.

All I have in terms of mods are an intake, y-pipe, cat-back and an underdrive pully. No other mods. Car does have 134K on it tho.

Any ideas?

Check for Knock Sensor code, clean MAF element with rubbing alcohol/q-tip. Search for your symptoms.

^^^ Good call .... check for codes and see what pops up. I had a simmilar problem with my 3rd gen and it was a vacume line off. Not saying that is what this is ... but, ya never know

One of the best tools I ever bought was an OBDII reader for my laptop. It does things like monitor in real time whats happening with my car. So if your o2 sensor has a flat spot it will tell you. Also things that you don't normally think of like an engine temp sensing unit going bad...it will tell you.

Falling flat on the face sounds like hesitation. When I had a bad knock sensor I would get that same flat on the face feeling but in the lower rpms...most notably between 1.5 k and 2k. You may just be experiencing your retarded timing at a different rpm range.

But do pull your codes and let us know whats up.

P0505 is your idle air control system. What symptoms are you experiencing other than the hesitation or is that it? Does your AC have lack-luster performance? Also....what is your idle at? Whats the rpms?

i have the same problem and mine falls on its face only while accelerating and only betweek 1000rpms and 1500rpms. only code i have is a code for the third o2 sensor, replaced the knock sensor when i got the car 14,000 miles ago and ive cleaned off the MAF three times, not a clogged fuel filter because i just recently changed that too. any idea of what it could be?

Same exact hesitation problem here. Only code i get is 14 06. I'm doing a 60K service tonight and will let you know if it improves. Can the KS be bad without sending a code?

i thought code 0505 says that problem was not recorded??

how did u pull the codes ? with the screw its 0505 = no malfunction detected

with the electronic reader then its code P 0505 then thats another story

Searched it P0505 is IACS. Unless he did the method were you watch the lights blink from the ecu...but I don't know many people who do that method.

^^ pretty much more than a billion users that visit this site do the screw method and watch lights blinking like zombies, but yeah everyone who cant get a reader has to do it this way

HAHAHA i stand corrected. I can just imagine people sitting there with their mouths just hanging open watching a little light blink.

but hey. i saved my sels the $115 dealership diagnose fee several times over the time i had my maxima. the funny thing is that the dealer cant even guarantee they will find the problem

I think i have a hesitation problem in my 95 maxima (auto). Sometimes, transmission just stalls and then jumps to lower gear giving me a kick in my back. It does the same thing when it up-shifts. It is even more pronounced then. Sometimes at somewhat lower speeds in the 40-50mph, when I hold gas pedal steady it starts shaking. Occasionally, when the stars are aligned and I floor it hard I can get the transmission to shift smoothly.

I scanned the codes and got only 2 (P0150 front o2 sensor left bank, P0325 knock sensor right bank). I switched MAF from the my wife's infinity 96 (it is a 5 speed) that does not exhibit any jerkiness but that did not change a whole lot which makes me think that it is not a MAF problem. I don't exclude the possibility that both MAFs have gone bad.

I do know for a fact that I have a slightly higher level of transmission fluid.
Could that be the problem? I have changed the fluid a few years ago with a synthetic one. I am assuming it should be good.

Sorry for the long ramble. It is just my daughter is getting into this driving age and I would like to get the car spruced up. Somehow I felt very unsafe giving the car with that problem to my kid.

I would appreciate any ideas.

I have started compiling a list of all possible problems related to hesitation.
Here is what I have come up with so far
1) If you give the car hard acceleration, does the "pull" drop off around 3.5k-4k?
If so, you could possibly need a new valve body on your transmission, like I did...
2) have a 2000 maxima with 74k miles one it....
my ground wire is bad on torque converter, thats what a tranny guy told me,
so i'll have that fixed up once i change my fluid, really soon....
3) MAF MAF MAF youve gotta replace it. Thats exactly what happened to my

One Maxima owner told me that a ground kit vastly improved the situation and
a valve body recalibration kit practically eliminated it. But that is not good
enough for me since these two mods together would run me about $450.

5) a few other theories: ignition coils, plugs (I have put in new irridium ones), oil in the cylinder(s) - bad oil gasket.
