Motorized Trunk WORKING!!!!!!

Well here is the problem, I have 98 maxima with some custom things on the trunk lid. As you all know the torsion rods to work well to begin with. Now i have a fiberglass, 10" tv, two 6 1/2 speakers and two crossovers built in to the trunk lid. To say the least it's very heavy and I have to lift it and hold it up. So i'm trying to figure out a way to use maybe an actuator or something that I can just push a button and it opens and closes. Please help thanks. Let me know where to get it, stroke length etc.
Here are the pictures of my under construction trunk
Update problem fixed and actuators work all thats left is the dressing up

looks nice, try using strut arms (like under the hood) ... should be easy to mount to something. gotta be sure to get the right length tho. measure them and then hit the auto parts store and do some goo'old American enginering!

it'll take some doing, but then again anything worth doing is worth doing right.

Cheers mate! g'luck

Yeah I'd try to use some hood struts if I were you, they're pretty beefy.

Ok, honestly I would try to find some clips of pimp my ride (I know I just committed a sin by saying that) where they used actuators or motors. My first choice would be an actuator I think 12" pull which can be ordered from select products. There are a/c ones that are cheaper and then you can just use an inverter to power that one. I've seen a guy get the motrorized latch from a cadillac and weld it in. When the trunk went down the motorized latch would catch and pull the trunk close, man it was sweet.

Second option would be a power window motor and rig it somehow, but I would still try to get the cadillac latch to work as the closer.

Here is my setup. It will hold your stuff up easily. I only spent $35 total and it only took an hour. More pics are available if wanted. PM with a phone # me if you need help, easier to tell you then writing it all out.

Solid setup. Do you have a problem with the trunk "banging" up?

What do you mean by "banging" up? If you mean by poping up by itself, NO. What I love about this set up is you can open your trunk up to any angle you want the trunk does not pop all the way open when you hit the trunk button. The trunk is foamed and has two layers of Dynamat (equals heavy trunk). It opens smooth like butta.

Oh, thanks for compliements!

Oliver

First off i'll just like to thank everyone for all the help. Keep it coming. hey Maxgtr2000 I still got you on my list of things to do: r34 dual angel eyes retro. As far as hood struts I tried it, after two days i gave up, the hood struts kept poppin out and when I finally got it in, my trunk was not aligned right and it would not fully close

I like it, good solution (when I saw the thread was old - I was just going to read it - but seeing that the OP brought it back... ) I was going to suggest counter weighting the lid and then using power winder motors to open/close it since a 'single' power winder switch is easily added to the center console... but your solution works right nicely.

Reply to SiathLinux: Where were you when i was looking for solutions to do it in the first place lol
Reply to JNCoRacer: Yeah i would like it to open and close faster too but thats the only motor speed i can get that will fully open the trunk and close it. Different lengths have diff speeds.

Pretty sweet, that's a serious setup right there. I think the open/close speed is fine since it is a show style car.

Well by the time I devised a way to do it - you'd already managed a solution... took me too long to work out the 'how'.

Even though your profile said Orlando, I knew it just because you were poppin trunk.

Only thing missing is your name in neon, but I understand why you don't do that lol.

Get your ride to Houston, we need to hit up Burlington Coat Factory and shut up those fools w/ the Chargers thinkin they're hot ****.
