Hey guys...I need to replace my knock sensor and instead of screwing around with the 'knock sensor tools', I was going to remove the UIM and LIM. I'm going this route because I wanted to do a thorough cleaning of my TB, IACV, EGR, UIM and LIM anyway. Being that I have never done this before, I just wanted to make sure I get the head's up on as many things as possible before I start. Any details/red flags/bits of advice in tackling this project would be greatly appreciated.

As far as replacing parts, here's my list so far:
- gasket between TB and UIM
- gasket between IACV and UIM
- gasket between UIM and LIM
- gasket(s) for EGR tube
- EGR tube (is there more than one? from the link to Sounbwoy's photos, seems like there's two: http://target.new.photos.yahoo.com/s...60762373221081)

Stupid question, but please confirm if you can: are there gaskets between LIM and heads? Will I need two gaskets, one for each bank?

Am I missing anything that would require replacement/cleaning?

What do you recommend to clean out everything? Carb cleaner? Brake cleaner?

I'm going to do a search to see if there are any step-bystep instructions for removing the UIM, but if any of you have a link handy I'd appreciate it. I think I recall seeing one a while back but couldn't find it with a brief search

you can save money and use black or copper RTV for everything but the LIM to UIM manifold hell you can reuse that one itll be fine the LIM to head does have a thin metal gasket though you might have to go to the stealership

be sure to put 2000 Upper back on instead of USIM, lol !

might want to check gaskets before replacing, i had a look at mine a while back, nothing wrong at all.

even so if you can manage to get IACV gasket off in one piece fine but either way use a thin bead of RTV around the assembly and put it back together no leaks no worries do it before you go to bed so it has a some hours to cure properley before starting it up

Any auto parts store should have the LIM to heads, and yes there are 2, and they come togehter as a set. I think I paid $12 for a set with pair of LIM to heads and UIM to LIM.

if you're gaskets are fine you can reuse them. when i installed my 00vi, i had about 90k on my car and i reused my gaskets.

Word of advice. Gaskets are cheap, tearing everything back apart because you didnt use a 5 dollar new gasket really sucks. Not that Ive done that before or anything.

I reused my IACV Gasket when I cleaned it... what would happen if it was bad/leaking? what should be happening?

I appreicate the responses guys, but let me know if there is anything ELSE that I am missing. I'm already planning on buying the gaskets and replaceing them. No way in hell am I going to reuse them

I would be keen to see pictures of how dirty you intake manifolds are.. I have 260kms on the clock so was considering opennig it up to have a look.

IMO you can easily switch the KS with just some extensions and a socket. You can clean the TB and IACV without removing intake manifolds. This way you don't make the job harder than it should be.

I used the extension method.. had the knock sensor out in about 20mins and not a single cut

I used this setup of extensions:
1/2 socketdrive + 1/2to3/8 + 10"3/8 extension + 3/8to1/4 + 1/4 swivel + 1/4 12mm



I found the grabber tool the easier way to position the bolt and knocksensor apon replacement. You will still need a magent pickup tool incase you drop th e bolt in an awkward spot like I did in a bit of a valley.

so there are two gaskets to be purchaced at the dealer ? one for the iacv one for the tb ?

and use only TB cleaner on the TB and only carb cleaner on the IACV ?
