i think dreamcatcher is on the right track, speed limiter i believe is in the ECU that wont let the car accelerate anymore, not really sure about that but i think its worth looking at.

They do have speed limiters. This is how you can remove them:

This can also be found in the "Mechanical/Maintainence" sticky.

Yea I'm trying to figure out why the car is weak around 6000k-redline, i mean in 1st 2nd 3rd it is, this isnt your average over rev, it like dies at 6krpm, and struggles to get to redline

might be air flow issue, clogged injectors, weak coil etc. plus the stock intake manifold is not very hp productive in high rpms at high speeds.

Sometimes the car will just die on me out of nowhere.. sometimes while changing gears.. while going slow..in park, at the stop light.. my usual rpm on drive is around 500-600rpm in first(is this the iddle speed?..yes im a noob :P) so anyways i was wondering if i replace the knock sensor on the car will it fix my problem? is there a good chance that it could be. is my RPM normal
also my brake pads dont have any anti rattle springs am i suppose to have them? I have tried many things to stop squealing from my car could this is the problem?

put a 470k ohm resistor in the ks harness plug, reset the codes and see if it helps. if it does than yes, you need a new ks. 500-600 rpm might be a bit low at idle - which is in N or P. the rpm will drop a bit in D if you have an AT. normal idle rpm is about 650-700rpm.
squealing from brakes most the time comes from crappy pads or dirt - spray some brake cleaner on the rotor and pads and see if it helps.

how exactly do you put the resistor in the harness plugZ? is there a special way? where is the harness plug, 470k ohm resistor where can i pick one up, is it expensive. reset the codes throught the code reader thing? reset as in erase code? normal rpm in P is like 800-900 drops to like 500-ish in D..tonight i had it in park and rpm was weird 700 to 500 moving around then dropped to like 300 looked like car was going to die then it rose to 400 wtf is wrong with my car . close to giving up...and ram it against a semi.. o also can a bad knock sensor turn off my car?
and i switched to OEM akebono brake pads and squealing has dropped dramatically almost completely. price diff was like $50 thought..
btw sorry for so many questions i am a car noob ++

get on the 4th gen forum and you'll see 2 threads, one about the 470k resistor which'll tell you exactly how to do it. and a second one about the iacv cleaning - this migh solve your idle issues.
the resistor is under $2 at radioshack just make sure it's 470k ohm. a bad ks won't shut the car off. is your check engine light on? can you get codes pulled/cleared at a local autozone?
the ks harness plug - follow the cable from your ks up the line, first plug on it is the harness connector.

noob means you're new and most likely don't know much, yet
pull the starter and get it tested at a parts store - they'll tell you what's up for sure.

Power steering
I wanna to change my power steering fluid, I read a couple of threads on this topic, my question is they say I have to put there Dexron II or Dexron III such as Mobil 1 ATF or Amsoil ATF, isn't it the automatic transmission fluid or this exactly what I have to put there?(Jus want to be on a safe side)
And how exactly do I emty the power steering system, which hoses do I have to disconnect?

Hey all, I have a very embarassing question to ask. I currently own a 98 Maxima SE. I'm wondering, how do you turn the AC on? It may seem like a stupid question, but I'm not sure how the digital fan settings work. It will go as low as 18C, but thats it. Even then it blows luke warm air at best. Now I've put up all summer with just keeping the windows down, since the weather hasn't been too bad with all the rain... but this rash of hot weather has made me wish it was working. It could very well be that 18 is as low as it goes, and the AC should be on, its just out of refrigerant, but I'd rather ask a free online question than take it to a shop for a test. Thanks a lot guys!

Ok well I don't know very much at all about cars, not saying I don't like them...I love certain cars for there look or how they perform....but my big brother (alicious) loves cars and so I wanted to learn. My question to start out with is what do you think the top ten things are that I should learn first about cars? thanks

yes it is the same as the fluid in your automatic transmission.

yes you are probably out of R-134a. the system is designed to automatically turn on the A/C as required by your temperature setting.

I recently went to get my 95 SE inspected, and was told I needed my steering rack/pinnion was leaking. And it would cost $800 to fix. Is this reasonable and something that is usually expensive?

Try to find out how much the part costs. This will give you a better idea of what they are charging for labor....

I have a noob question you you. My 95 will not turn over. The starter is good.. Battery is good . Battery terminals are clean and tight.But.. I'm not getting power from the black/red wire at the starter solenoid. what should I check next?? Just bought the book today so I hope that will help narrow it down too. Thanks and Aloha!!!

where to buy new cupholders
Hi everyone! I'm new here obviously. I just bought an older (1997) maxima and I love it. Except for one thing. The cupholders in the front are just the size for soda cans but aren't big enough for water bottles or anything even slightly bigger. The cupholder thing seems to pull right out, so I was wondering if there is any kind of aftermarket piece I can buy to replace it with bigger holes for bottles.
Thanks!
Susie

Ok since theres not an all motor noob thread, I'll post this here. I'm planning on putting 3.5 cams in my 3.0 and I had a question about the install. I know you need the adapters, but I've read that they also needed to be drilled, about 183 deg. Is this true, and how would I go about doing this?
Thanks
